About us

The Future Fund is Australia’s sovereign wealth fund. We invest for the benefit of future generations of Australians. We were established in 2006 to strengthen the Australian Government’s long-term financial position. Today, we manage over $250 billion across six public asset funds. Our role is to generate strong, risk adjusted returns over the long term. We are a global investor and work closely with world leading investment organisations to access the best investment ideas. Working at the Future Fund offers a unique opportunity to have a real impact on future generations of Australians. Our people come to work each day knowing that their work is delivering financial returns that will strengthen the Australian Government’s long-term financial position, support medical research, assist Indigenous Australians, support drought resilience and communities impacted by natural disaster and help fund Australia’s National Disability Insurance Scheme. We are passionate about our culture. It is at the heart of our success and the driving force behind our ‘one team, one purpose’ philosophy, which challenges our people to look for the ideas and solutions that benefit the organisation as a whole. Our values define how we work: - We focus on what matters. Everything we do is focused on achieving our purpose and we don't get sidetracked by distractions. - We always do the right thing by our country, our organisation and our team. - We work together to achieve the best outcome, every time, and ultimately to achieve our purpose. We are committed to nurturing an inclusive work environment, that embraces diversity in all its forms and allows flexibility to thrive. Following the release of our latest position paper, Geopolitics: the Bedrock of the New Investment Order in June, we welcomed the opportunity to participate in a podcast episode with Bridgewater Associates. Our Chief Investment Officer Ben Samild joined Bridgewater’s co-CIO Karen Karniol-Tambour, Head of Strategist Group Atul Lele, and BDO Deputy Editor Jake Davidson, to discuss several key themes: ·      How different investors think about portfolio resiliency ·      What levers investors pull to engineer greater resiliency ·      How do investors think about these challenges from an organisational perspective During the discussion, Ben shared insights into how we invest the Future Fund Way, breaking down the pivotal elements of our investment strategy, and discussing how we view and navigate risk, particularly in the current geopolitical climate. ‘In terms of environment, we felt that the world that was built over the last 40 years was over, there was a changing geopolitical environment which was going to lead to a changing domestic policy environment and change priorities.’ (Ben Samild) Click below to hear more about how the Future Fund thinks about resilience, and our whole-of-portfolio approach to investing. #futurefund #sovereignwealthfunds #investing #wealthmanagement https://lnkd.in/g4EieqiQ

And that is a wrap on our 2024 Future Investors Intern Program! Over the past four weeks, our 12 inaugural Future Investor Interns have been immersed in the dynamic environment of the Future Fund, and the world of dynamic global investment funds management. They worked closely alongside our Investment Team and other Future Fund Team members, learning about the Future Fund way of investing and the special sauce that is our wonderful culture, and visited one of our key infrastructure assets – the Port of Melbourne. They also participated in our annual Investment Competition to compete for the Paul Costello Cup. This year the competition pulled together cross-business teams to work on a solution to the question "What is EEE and what would we do differently?" EEE, or Equity Equivalent Exposure, is the Future Fund’s unique tool which helps measure how much investment risk exposure is taken at the Fund level, which corresponds to how much risk the Board of Guardians thinks the Fund should take on average. As part of the Investment Competition experience, teams attended a NIDA Presenting with Impact training session as well as a number of other Future Fund Academy workshops, and designed and delivered a final presentation to the whole of the Future Fund in a bid to convince our esteemed internal judging panel on their solution. Huge congratulations to two of our Future Investor Interns, Ryan and Amelia who were in the winning team, ‘EEEvestigators’ with their presentation of two unique ideas to further refine EEE in alignment with our long-term investment goals. In the final week of the Future Investors Intern Program each Future Investor presented on an individual project that they had been working on throughout their time at the Future Fund. The curiosity, innovation and professionalism in all our Future Investors’ presentations was inspirational and perfectly encapsulated their time at the Future Fund. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with our Future Investors over the past month, and we wish them the absolute best in their future studies and careers. #futurefund #sovereignwealthfund #internship #investment #peopleandculture

The Future Fund is one of the largest investors in Australian infrastructure with a number of Australian landmarks in our portfolio including the Port of Melbourne. CEO of the Port, Saul Cannon, came in to speak to our people this week to provide an update on current activities and a glimpse of the long-term future of this important asset. The Future Fund currently holds a 20% stake in the Port, and it is one of the Future Fund’s largest single investments. The facility is Australia’s largest container and cargo port, handling more than one third of the nation’s container trade, which equates to around 3.2 million containers annually. Around 3,000 ships visit annually, generating around $11 billion in economic activity for Australia. #futurefund #portofmelbourne #sovereignwealthfund #infrastructureinvesting Image caption: Amelia Watson (Future Fund), Saul Cannon, (Port of Melbourne), James White (Future Fund) and Khai Nguyen (Port of Melbourne)

We were delighted to host a Mini Corroboree in our office in celebration of NAIDOC Week. Guest performer, Ganga Giri played the Yidaki while the Djarlo Dance Group interacted with the ‘Dreaming’ through spiritual language and song to share their stories. The theme for 2024 is ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, loud and proud’ and it was fantastic to learn about the profound significance of traditional dances and the lessons they hold. #NAIDOCWeek2024 #KeepTheFireBurning #sovereignwealthfund #futurefund #peopleandculture

For long-term investors, understanding over-the-horizon trends can be critical. Last week, we were fortunate to have renowned US demographer, historian, and author Neil Howe share his perspectives on generational cycles and 'turnings' of history. As forward-thinking investors, it’s valuable to look back at history to help anticipate future opportunities and challenges in an evolving investment landscape. Thank you, Neil, for sharing your generational insights with us, as we focus on fulfilling our purpose of investing for the benefit of future generations of Australians. #FutureFund #FutureInvesting #GenerationalInsights #NeilHowe #LongTermTrends #ForwardThinking   Image 1: Future Fund Director, Research & Insights Craig Thorburn, with Neil Howe and Future Fund Corporate Affairs Manager, Anna Pienkos. A vital part of the Future Fund employee experience is ensuring we have a healthy workplace, with staff health and wellbeing a key focus within our people strategy. This year we’re focussing on addressing mental, financial, and physical health factors. This includes work around creating meaningful roles, upskilling leaders, fostering flexible work arrangements, and offering supportive initiatives that complement and enhance the overall employee experience. Over the past two quarters, we have been fortunate to host two fantastic expert speakers who came to talk to our people about two particular wellbeing factors – financial and mental. Firstly, thank you to Melissa Browne, who spoke with us about how to become financially empowered and well, both personally and in business. She encouraged having courageous conversations about finances, money, and other topics we tend to avoid. Secondly, our thanks to Dr. Zac Seidler, who spent time with us debunking myths about men’s health and emphasizing the importance of social connections for mental health, which often surpass diet and exercise. He also highlighted the value of authentic and honest male role models from diverse backgrounds, the masculinity perception gap (the disconnect between personal beliefs and what men think society believes), and the training programs and resources available on the Movember website. His simple call to action: call your mates. #futurefund #sovereignwealthfund #employeeexperience #workplaceculture #callyourmates Image #1: Future Fund Legal Manager, Sandy Smith and HR Business Partner, Beau McCall with Melissa Browne.
