Are you using the ‘right’ words in your resume and cover letters…?!   Tuesday’s tip this week is continuing within the theme of AI…   I met with a very senior contact recently. He had applied for a role in a very prestigious, tech-focused business. He found himself in an interview with a very baffled interviewer who simply couldn’t get his head around why this candidate was comfortable taking such a major demotion which is what this role would be. Turns out he absolutely wasn’t comfortable with it. The computer got it wrong and matched him with a role that was so far away from his seniority that it really was a big old waste of everyone’s time!   It got me thinking about some of the resumes we have been receiving for entry level candidates and how they would be deciphered by AI. When you are in the infancy of your career, you can feel that your resume is lacking and that you need to jazz it up a bit… embellish parts of it if you will! That’s all well and good, we are all guilty of that to some degree… BUT… be careful of the words you are using as it could just come and bite you on the bottom when AI is pre-screening. For example:   🌟The candidate who has been running a lash extension business alongside university for the last few years and using the title ‘CEO’ on their resume… could bite your bottom. 🌟 The candidate that has been helping with the family business’ social media and using the title ‘Marketing Director’… could also bite your bottom.   When you are early in your career, these pieces of experience are invaluable and likely to set you apart from other candidates BUT you don’t want a piece of recruitment tech removing you as a viable candidate presuming you are too experienced because your most recent job title is CEO.   So, the advice here is this:   ✍ Tailor your resume to specific job descriptions… no fabrication or exaggeration… make sensible, relevant word choices for the win! 📝 Support your CV with a cover letter that elaborates on the most relevant experience where necessary… again written by a human (see tip 1) 📞 Give the recruiter or hiring manager a call to check in on the progress of your application and talk through the nuances of your experience where necessary.   AI is game-changing in recruitment but as someone so early on in your career, don’t let it catch you out!

“I’ve applied for hundreds of jobs, and I just haven’t heard anything back”… Excellent entry level candidate who, if someone would actually physically speak to her, would give her a job in a heartbeat. Feb 2024.   We are hearing this a lot. It’s actually blowing my mind the quality of some of these candidates. They are more confident, more articulate and more focused than I ever was at that stage in my career, but they’re often not even getting the opportunity to speak to anyone, and businesses are missing out as a consequence.   It isn’t the easiest of tasks getting your foot in the door, so every Tuesday we are sharing our advice when it comes to applying for early career roles and hope that it helps your journey and outcomes in some small way 😊   TIP ONE: STRIKE A HAPPY MEDIUM WHEN IT COMES TO USING AI…   There is no doubt that AI has had huge impact in the recruitment space and in part, I’m for it. But it is also clear that at entry level, when you have very little experience on your resume, it can have negative ramifications. A big faux pas we are seeing is the widespread use of AI generated cover letters. Seems easy right, whack the job ad into Chat GPT, say ‘write me a cover letter for this job’ and VOILA… jobs a good ’un… or is it?   !!! NOTE - WE HAVE SEEN THE EXACT SAME COVER LETTER AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN !!!   When you are simply taking the cover letter from Chat GPT and using it verbatim…   1.) It is likely to be exactly the same as someone else’s cover letter. 2.) It's entirely obvious that it has been written by a computer. 3.) It can and does miss context completely. 4.) We gain no insight into your communication style or unique personality whatsoever.   So, here’s the advice… use it, it will save you time creating a baseline template or flow for your letter. BUT sprinkle it with your own personality - your own unique tone. Use stories that a computer won’t (hopefully 😐) be privy to. Show us the human you! I can guarantee it will set you apart from other candidates and help you to get that all important human conversation in the diary!   Enjoy your Tuesdays! #graduatecareers #airecruitment #jobhuntingtips
