First Peoples' Assembly of Victoria

Aboriginal law and lore has been practised on this land long before any other. Last week, there was a First Peoples ceremonial sitting at the Supreme Court of Victoria. Embellished with possum skins, art and gum leaf, the event highlighted contributions made by Elders, First Nations barristers, solicitors, judicial officers and court staff. It was the first ceremony of its kind, a powerful recognition of some important truths in this State and a strong embrace of First Peoples’ cultures – which is always something we like to see!

Yoorrook Justice Commission are seeking short submissions on the health system. Short submissions are a quick and easy way to help put the true history of Victoria on the public record. Hey mob, we’re getting ready to negotiations with the Victorian Government about the first Statewide Treaty.   We’re putting together a roadmap and a list of the topics we want to let the Government know are priorities for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in Victoria.   The guiding principle underpinning all our work is that decisions about Aboriginal communities, cultures and lands, should be made by Aboriginal people.   Treaty is to make sure that Aboriginal communities can always use their knowledge to come up with practical solutions at a local level.   There's a lot to it, but it’s important that mob are across the ideas being taken into Treaty negotiations.
