Fairlight’s investment mandate is to invest in wealth-generating small and mid-cap businesses located outside of Australia. Provided there exists both a strong regulatory framework and a stable currency, we are generally agnostic about the country in which our businesses are domiciled and, more importantly, operate. In practice, this results in Fairlight’s investible universe being the developed markets of North America, Europe, the UK and Japan. Given that Japanese equities have been attracting increasing interest from global investors over the past few months, in this report we outline our cautious approach to investing in this market and one new recent investment the Fund has made there. Discussing the intricacies of accounting adjustments, amortization and depreciation schedules may not be as exciting to read about as the growth trajectory of the next AI stock, however it forms an important part of our investment process. The fund manager explains why she is so bullish on one US retailer and what she learnt from co-founding homegrown hedge fund VGI Partners with Rob Luciano.

2023 was a successful year for the Fund, delivering investors a 33% return, outpacing the MSCI World SMID Index by 19 percentage points. Since inception in 2018 the Fund has now delivered investors a 13% p.a. return and 5% p.a. outperformance which is in line with our long term objective. From an operational perspective, the underlying portfolio holdings collectively grew revenues by 2% and EPS by 3%.
