Let’s clear up some misconceptions ⬇️    Child sexual abuse that happens online is just as serious as abuse that happens in person 🖥️💻📱 It can deeply affect a child’s mental health and well-being, and it’s something we need to address directly.     Online sexual abuse takes many forms; from the non-consensual sharing of intimate images and sexual extortion to grooming and tech-facilitated abuse.     Together, parents and carers, educators, and frontline workers play a crucial role in preventing this harm 💡 Stay informed and help create a safer online world for our children and young people: https://lnkd.in/gx-hDSR2

🌏 Australia and 10 other members of the Global Partnership for Action on Gender-Based Online Harassment and Abuse are calling attention to the urgent need to address all forms of technology-facilitated gender-based violence against women in political and public life. False or misleading gender and sex-based narratives are being used to cause deep harm to the women, girls and LGBTQI+ persons who are targeted. At the same time, new and emerging technologies are enabling harmful, violent rhetoric and attacks against women, girls and LGBTQI+ public figures across borders at a scale and speed previously unseen. We urge technology and other private companies to take appropriate action to respond to this threat, including applying #SafetyByDesign to the development and deployment of platforms and technologies. eSafety has created this new resource with practical steps for companies: https://lnkd.in/gV7YxsFG Read the joint statement ⤵

Sharing intimate images without consent is abuse and it’s illegal. The victim is never to blame. Yet 21% of people think if a woman sends a naked picture to her partner, then she’s partly responsible if he shares it without her permission. Our research shows that those affected by image-based abuse often seek help from friends or family first, but the shame and fear can make asking for help hard. If this happens to someone you care about, let them know they are not at fault. Here’s how you can support them: 👂 Listen without judgment. Never blame or shame them 💬 Use supportive language 🗑️ Help them report it to eSafety 📲 Check in with them regularly and stay connected 🤝 Encourage them to seek further help if feeling really distressed (e.g. Lifeline Australia, Kids Helpline, Beyond Blue) Learn more about how you can help someone deal with image-based abuse: https://lnkd.in/g_7SYh4B

It's heartening to see a growing awareness of how tech-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV) is hampering - even eroding - gender equality in online and offline spaces. But even as TFGBV becomes a key focus for governments, researchers and technology experts, our knowledge of its nature, pervasiveness and impacts remains patchy. 💡 To design effective prevention strategies, we must have a sophisticated understanding of the problem, perpetration and at-risk population groups, as well as evaluating what's working, and what's not.   🤝 That's why eSafety was delighted to contribute to the new TFGBV Shared Research Agenda report from Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI), 'Technology Facilitated Gender-Based Violence: A Global Shared Research Agenda'. We particularly welcome the focus on technology providers and what they're doing to proactively address this harm on platforms and services.    ➡ eSafety has long advocated for the imperative of #SafetyByDesign as crucial pillar of any harm prevention strategy, and has recently launched a world-first paper on TFGBV and Safety by Design: https://lnkd.in/gV7YxsFG   We encourage all those contributing to the evidence-base and research on violence against women to read and share this research blueprint ⬇

📢The TFGBV Shared Research Agenda report is now available online in English, Spanish, French and Arabic! After 18 months of co-creation and collaboration with over 500 experts, the SVRI, along with partners —the Association for Progressive Communications, UN Women, and the Global Partnership to End Online Abuse and Harassment— are excited to announce the release of this critical research agenda on tech-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV). 🌟"The domains of the agenda really help focus researchers and advocates. I would have loved an agenda like this when I started, to know where to began my research”, said Dr Nyx McLean (They/Them) during the webinar launch. As TFGBV continues to evolve rapidly, it demands coordinated action from all stakeholders to develop evidence-based and effective solutions. This shared research agenda is a significant step forward in the global effort to create a world free from violence, both online and offline. ➡️Explore the full report or a summary document available in four languages: https://lnkd.in/dVPtjeen #TFGBV #ResearchAgenda #ResearchImpact #EndOnlineViolence #ReporLaunch
