⚡Last week, staff from Energy Policy WA’s Consumer Policy Branch presented at an industry event organised by Strata Community Association (WA), the peak industry body supporting and developing the strata sector in Western Australia.   Sarah Woenne and Madelin Pow spoke to members about proposed reforms to the regulation of embedded networks under the Alternative Electricity Services (AES) framework. These reforms will help people who buy their electricity through embedded networks and will ensure all customers have access to similar electricity rights - regardless of how their electricity service is provided.   Around 60 people attended the event. The event was a great chance to speak directly to the strata sector, and to acknowledge the valuable feedback industry has contributed thus far. A Q&A followed the presentation, and we were able to answer questions directly from strata managers around the details of the reform. Questions touched on topics including timelines, costs, exemptions, and compliance requirements.   To find out more about these important reforms, follow the link below🔻   https://lnkd.in/gdEfZbmn

Exciting news for the Pilbara and our State’s energy transition! The State Government has identified four priority corridors for the development of new common-use transmission infrastructure as part of the Pilbara Energy Transition (PET) Plan. At today’s Pilbara Roundtable held in Port Hedland, we launched an Expression of Interest process, inviting project proponents within these corridors to apply for Priority Project status. The identified priority corridors are: ▪️ Burrup (Murujuga) Corridor ▪️ Chichester Range Corridor ▪️ Hamersley Range Corridor ▪️ Great Sandy Desert Corridor Designated Priority Projects will receive a State Government endorsement for consideration by the Clean Energy Finance Corporation for concessional financing, with up to $3 billion available from WA’s allocation under the Australian Government's Rewiring the Nation program. These priority projects will help accelerate the decarbonisation of the Pilbara region. The State Government is investing $500,000 in the Switch Your Thinking initiative, helping more WA households and small businesses improve their energy efficiency and reduce energy bills. Switch Your Thinking is a Local Government sustainability initiative founded in 2002 by the City of Armadale, the City of Gosnells, and the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale. This funding will be used to deliver expanded energy efficiency education and resources in local government areas all across the State. It will support: ✅ 200 DIY energy audit toolkits for loan at local libraries across Perth and regional WA.  ✅ Energy-efficiency workshops throughout 2025, focused on reducing energy use and planning for electrification.  ✅ A chance for households and small businesses to save on energy bills and reduce their usage. With 41 local governments already expressing interest, this initiative marks another step towards WA’s goal of net zero emissions by 2050. 🎉We are thrilled that Brooke Eddington, an energy policy professional with over 20 years of experience, will be participating in the PSC’s Women in Executive Leadership program for 2024/2025. Brooke has been contributing to the Western Australian energy sector since the early 2000s and recognised early on in her career the significant potential for Western Australia to benefit from sustainable energy solutions. Brooke has a wealth of experience navigating complex policy challenges - including greenhouse gas emissions reduction policy, power supply options in the Pilbara, and planning generation mix in the South West Interconnected System. At EPWA, we are incredibly proud of Brooke's achievements and excited about this opportunity for her to further enhance her leadership skills. The Women in Executive Leadership program is designed to provide practical experience in corporate executive decision-making, governance, and operations, supporting the development of women leaders in the public service.

Last week was an exciting week in the WA energy space, with the Energy Week Western Australia conference taking place in Perth. The event is WA’s premier energy conference and brought together national and international experts from across the energy sector. Thank you to the Australian Institute of Energy (AIE) - Perth and all the organisers involved for a fantastic event. Highlights from the conference included: ⚡Insightful discussions on the social license challenges of delivering the energy transition for Western Australia, with a clear message: we can't keep working like it is business as usual. Building trust and strong relationships with local communities is key to achieving our shared goals. ⚡Rachel Peterson from the California Public Utilities Commission shared California's clean energy journey, offering valuable insights on how they are tackling wildfires and the impacts of a changing climate. ⚡A panel focused on optimising Distributed Energy Resources (DER), explored how to deliver benefits for all consumers, drive lower emissions, and support a reliable and secure energy system by 2030. ⚡Another important panel discussion focussed on coordinating investment to decarbonise WA's energy sector, highlighting the need for strategic planning and collaboration. Finally, congratulations to all the nominees and winners of the annual Energy in WA awards night, with special recognition to Project Symphony for winning the AIE WA Innovation of the Year award.

🌟 Exciting News from EPWA and Australian Institute of Energy 🌟 We are thrilled to announce that Helen Mitchell, a Sir Roland Wilson Scholar at the The Australian National University, will be speaking at the 2024 Energy Week Western Australia conference at the Ritz Carlton on August 15 & 16, 2024. Helen Mitchell’s research explores economic security and statecraft in a new global order – one in which Australia faces sharper trade-offs between sovereignty, security and prosperity. More recently, she was part of a cadre of experts providing strategic advice to the Australian Prime Minister and Federal Government.  As countries transition to new energy systems, new political and economic dynamics are emerging, creating both challenges and opportunities for providers and enablers. Firms delivering electricity, gas, and related services can adapt by deepening and creating links between government, business, and research entities to anticipate developments and shape holistic policies that address economic, security, community, environmental and other national interests. This session will explore the following factors and offer insights and context to delegates. Secure your ticket to the 2024 Energy in WA conference now Tickets (energywa.org.au)
