The South Australian Government yesterday announced the commencement of the application and assessment process for BHP's planned smelter and refinery expansion at Olympic Dam—a crucial step towards achieving their copper growth strategy. Located 560km north of Adelaide, Olympic Dam is part of BHP's Minerals Australia operation, featuring both underground and surface activities, along with a fully integrated processing facility from ore to metal. Congratulations to ACEN Australia on the approval of the Birriwa Solar and Battery project by the Independent Planning Commission (IPC). This 600-megawatt renewable energy project, southeast of Dunedoo in NSW's Central-West Orana (CWO) region, will generate enough power to supply approximately 262,000 average Australian homes. As a significant generation and storage project within the CWO Renewable Energy Zone, it represents a major step forward for renewable energy in the region.   As the lead consultant on the Birriwa project, we are proud to have supported ACEN through the development phase with environmental planning and approval processes. Our team led the preparation of the scoping report in support of a request to the NSW Department of Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure for the Secretary’s Environmental Assessment Requirements, and prepared the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to support the state planning application. Additionally, we prepared the project’s submissions report and an amendment report for the inclusion of a temporary construction workers accommodation facility. Water scarcity and environmental challenges require us to embrace innovative solutions like Purified Recycled Water (PRW) technology. During the recent ‘Diving Deep into Purified Recycled Water’ webinar hosted by Good For The Hood’s Jo Taranto, it was highlighted that PRW has been successfully implemented in about 35 cities worldwide. This proven technology (which has been in existence for at least 50 years) not only removes up to 98% of PFAS contaminants from our water supply, significantly improving water quality, but it also supports resilience during droughts by reducing the demand on stored water resources. The Western Sydney Pumped Hydro (WSPH) Project will utilise a disused coal washery site and WaterNSW’s Lake Burragorang as a long term energy storage site capable of providing 1GW of on-demand electricity, enough to power 500,000 homes. ZEN Energy has commenced a range of studies and community consultations to ensure the project meets planning, environmental, and community support requirements. EMM is working with ZEN Energy to guide the project through the NSW and Commonwealth approval processes.
