Girls have a right to: - be safe and feel safe wherever they are - expect that the adults around them keep them safe - be given information about how to raise a safety concern - be listened to and for action to be taken if they have a safety concern. Our vision for the future is for a world where we care about what’s happening to our girls. And that this plays out in the systems responsible for the health and wellbeing of children. Everyone needs to play a role in making this happen. Human rights are not individual, we all need to contribute. Angry that trans-women and sistergirls are being murdered. Angry that even in death, the Australian media continue to misgender trans-women and sistergirls. Quoting Sherele Moody: “❤️SHE MATTERS: UNNAMED WOMAN❤️ As I write, almost 18% of Australian women killed in 2024 are Indigenous. ALL DIED AS A RESULT OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. Black or white, every woman bleeds red and every woman matters and this is why we need to talk more about the killing of Indigenous Australian women. Often faceless, often nameless, almost always invisible - these are the women our communities, our leaders and our media forget exist. They are usually relegated to the bottom of news feeds or the back pages. Sometimes, their deaths don't even attract media coverage. I have documented the killing of 11 Indigenous women in 2024 - this means 17.7% of Australian women killed this year are First Nations women. And 16 of the 17 were allegedly murdered by current or former partners - one woman was killed by her male housemate. The latest woman to be killed was just 22 years old. Murdered in Katherine, NT, on Monday, her male partner has now been charged. She is the 62nd Australian woman killed this year. Indigenous women represent 3.8% of women nationally and yet 17.7% of women murdered this year come from our First Nations community. It's just ... heartbreaking. We know Indigenous women suffer violence at significantly higher levels than other women - and they are more likely to be killed or hospitalised as a result - yet so little is being done. We can't change the story for the woman killed this week, the women killed this year or the women killed these past centuries - but we should be acting to change the future for ALL our sisters. Sometimes our women feel like there is no escaping family violence. And sometimes finding a way forward means stepping out of survival mode and discovering or reconnecting with the things that bring you joy and connection. We recently collaborated with two of our women who on different parts of their journey to create tote bags using their art. Anyone using our service can fill the bag with donated goodies.
