The Northern Territory Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Korean Mine Rehabilitation and Mineral Resources Corporation (KOMIR) to enhance cooperation in the critical minerals resources sector between our two regions. The Territory has a strong pipeline of emerging mining projects in critical minerals and precious metals for the advanced manufacturing of batteries, semiconductors and renewable energy technologies. Demand for these critical minerals is projected to grow rapidly with the increasing transition to renewable energy and battery storage and high-technology industries. The MoU is designed to promote cooperation in critical minerals resources and growth in all stages of the critical minerals life cycle including, exploration, mining, processing manufacturing and recycling. This is a significant milestone that further strengthens trade relationships between the Northern Territory and South Korea. It also places the Northern Territory as a secure and reliable partner for critical mineral supply to South Korea.

Board members from Northern Territory Cattleman’s Association and the Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade had the opportunity during the 2024 NT Cattleman’s Association in Alice Springs last week to discuss the importance of our live cattle exports with the Indonesian Ambassador, His Excellency Dr Siswo Pramono. The Northern Territory’s history with Indonesia dates back centuries, embarking in international trade for many hundreds of years. Live cattle to Indonesia continue to dominate Northern Territory agriculture exports, with long term relationships established and continuing to grow. The Northern Territory continues to diversify and establish new two-way trade opportunities with Indonesia to further our economic relationships. The Northern Territory Government’s International Engagement Strategy 2022-2026 identifies Indonesia as a high-priority market to help achieve our ambitions of a $40 billion economy by 2030.

The Northern Territory is on show, with government and Territory businesses representing our region at The 2024 ASEAN-Australia Special Summit, beginning today until 6 March. Celebrating 50 years in our shared history, the three-day Summit provides an opportunity to strengthen foreign partnerships focusing on; business, emerging leaders, climate and clean energy, and maritime cooperation. The Territory has so much to be proud of, and we’re looking forward to connecting with fellow stakeholders.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Australia celebrate 50 years of partnership in 2024. A number of Territory businesses have been invited to exhibit at the Marketplace presenting an opportunity to promote the Territory’s trade and investment opportunities. To date, the following Territory businesses have confirmed attendance, with more to be confirmed: Injalak Arts & Crafts, Life H20, Kakadu Organics, GTNT Group and BLACKBIRD Technology Services. The Commemorative Summit is to be held in Melbourne on 4-6 March 2024.

The Department and Industry were well represented at the Australia Vietnam Policy Institute (AVPI) Darwin Roundtable. Enhancing trade and investment in agriculture and resources headlined the first session of discussions, followed by a strong emphasis of education in forging long-term benefit for the economy. A massive thank you to Camilla Philip and Larnie Batten from the Department who assisted in facilitating the day's events.
