Strategic Executive Leader | Expert in Multi-Stakeholder Innovation & Generative Governance | Award-Winning Agent for Positive Change

Heya Service and Strategic Designers, Simon Goodrich and I have made a little video for you to enjoy this weekend✨ There's still time to contribute to the survey here https://lnkd.in/gDV5dbnG Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far, your responses have been amazing! As Cameron Tonkinwise wrote yesterday - the momentum is building in our design communities to share our knowledges and collaboratively strengthen our practices. We would love you to be part of it 🙌 [and it goes without saying, that as designers we're always keen for feedback on our video! This was our first ever collab vid, done in an alleyway in Naarm, surrounded by art and next to a coffee shop ☕) Jo Kellock Zoë Rose Jane Aslanidis Design Institute of Australia Australian Design Council #design #servicedesign #strategicdesign

  • Well said Camereon. We are all for practice groups. They are evolving naturally on social media platforms and with political smarts added to a designer's repertoire, the issues can be addressed through collaboration i.e. exactly what you are all doing now. Congrats on your initiative & Laura & Simon. And thanks to all those who are rallying to have new and emerging disciplines formally recognised. Please complete the survey https://lnkd.in/gFRaX_WK. Sub is due in this Friday!

Design Studies, Transition Design, Service Design

I was reflecting earlier in the week (in relation to https://lnkd.in/gQr4s-zj) about the recent history of the not-really-a-profession of design. I had the fortune to take up a position at Parsons School of Design - The New School just as 'design thinking' was taking off 15 years ago. All of sudden people were paying attention to this expert practice that had previously been dismissed as superficial. Designers (and design researchers and educators) were prompted to reflect critically on the nature of designing because of this rather unthinking interloper. A lively community of practice emerged and it felt like a more ambitious yet responsible designing might result. In the wash-up, that discourse dissipated and 'Design' lost, though not to design thinking; instead 'design' got re-marginalised by UX (and by HCI in universities). Right now, in Australia (or at least on its east coast), it feels to me a little like NYC in 2008. The Federal government bureaucracy is doing some very bureaucratic things like re-classifying jobs, and their associated skills. These are interesting Catch-22 moments in which you need to evidence that a lot of people are doing a job called, for example, 'service design,' to get 'service design' formally recognised as a category the government counts as a type of job, though organisations might not yet call that job 'service design' because it is not yet a recognised type of job. A bunch of people have mobilised to intervene in these re-classifications on behalf of design and its more recent variants, and all of a sudden there are lots interesting conversations and collaborations. For my part, I am trying to convene university design school leaders to make a joint submission. It would be shocking to outsiders how little conversation there is between university design schools about what core skills and jobs they each teach toward. Design Institute of Australia, through Laura Kostanski and Jo Kellock, have been leading a response, as they did when the Fields of Research were reclassified a couple of years ago (see image). ➡ Fill out their survey here: https://lnkd.in/graGSTES Simon Goodrich of Portable and Jane Aslanidis of Australian Design Council are organising submissions. Zoë Rose, who is currently researching the codification of design capabilities in the Australian Public Service at UTS Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building, has just published in The Mandarin on this: https://lnkd.in/guZWhCig We might succeed in getting design more significantly into the government's code book, but an even better outcome would the creation of a vibrant community of practice committed to enhancing the ambition and responsibility of the practice of designing.
