The Department of Transport is the lead agency for strategic transport policy, planning and investment in Western Australia. Together with our portfolio partners – Main Roads WA and the Public Transport Authority – we keep people and freight moving through an intricate system of roads, railways, airports, ports, shared paths and waterways. With more than 1,500 employees we have the expertise to provide and enable safe, accessible and efficient movement for the economic and social prosperity of Western Australia. Our dedicated teams of transport professionals provide integrated transport planning for moving people and freight in metropolitan and regional Western Australia and develop strategic transport policy in the fields of maritime, aviation, bike riding and walking and land transport. We are committed to creating opportunities for Indigenous individuals and businesses to share in the delivery of projects across the Transport Portfolio and, as an agency, support assisting disadvantaged people in remote areas of our State to obtain their drivers licence and gain access to employment and other social and economic opportunities. Our customer-focused frontline staff also deliver a range of transport services to the community including licensing functions for people, vehicles and vessels; regulating Western Australia’s on-demand taxi industry; developing and managing coastal infrastructure; keeping people safe in and around the water and administering a range of transport grants and subsidies. Our vision is to have the best integrated and intelligent transport services and solutions for the State, which supports our purpose to empower a thriving community. Today we announced a $7.8 million contract has been awarded for an extensive electrical upgrade at Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour paving the way for the future development of the iconic facility. This builds on the existing $2.9 million construction project delivering a new purpose-built building improved facilities for penholders and the public and underpins the future of Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour, allowing for growth of the unique world-class facility which already attracts an estimated 1.5 million visitors each year.

Rebecca Poduti, Acting Director, Strategic Programs within Driver and Vehicle Services attended the Austroads’ International Identity and Verifiable Credentials Summit 2024 (IVC24) in Sydney last week. Representatives from Australian jurisdictions, Europe and the United States demonstrated the technology by walking through the U.S Department of Homeland Security’s CAT2 airport gate using their proof-of concept digital driver’s licence to symbolically board ‘Flight 18013’ showing the ease of identity and credential verification domestically and internationally.
Australia is taking a significant step forward in digital transformation with the beta Digital Trust Service led by #Austroads, marking an important step towards national and international harmonisation of mobile driver's licence standards and verification. For the first time, the Digital Trust Service would enable Australian jurisdictions to safely and securely verify credentials in line with international best practice (ISO-compliant). Austroads has been collaborating with jurisdictions to ensure states and territories are ISO-ready, aiming to launch new mobile driver licences in 2025 and 2026.
