  • From Germany to the NT's majestic Big River's region - a skilled educator making a big impact. Meet Annabella, an inspiring Year 5/6 Teacher at Casuarina Street Primary School, Katherine. Annabella was first introduced to the education profession in 2017 as a student mentor and knew from that moment that she wanted to make a difference in the lives of children from all different walks of life. "I saw the importance of school not only being a learning environment but a safe and happy place for many children. Seeing the happiness and excitement on a child's face when they achieve something gives me the motivation everyday to work hard and give students that feeling as often as I can." Originally hailing from Germany - life in the Territory is very different to anything Annabella has ever experienced. Her advice for a teacher who is new to the NT -rural town or remote community - would be "...get out there and give everything a go, whether that is in your teaching career or personally. Take part in community events, join a sports team, become a member of the local art committee, participate in as many professional development opportunities as you can. There’s so many incredible people out there who are a wealth of knowledge in the teaching profession and also really great people are to spend an afternoon at a local swimming hole with." "I’ve definitely done a lot more hiking since living in the NT than I ever thought I would do in my life – but how can you not when there is so many picturesque landscapes and rock holes to be seen! My love for fishing has also grown. There’s nothing more exciting than chasing the ever-elusive barramundi and sharing those stories with students." Annabella completed two university placements in Katherine schools and has now been a classroom teacher for 5 years at one of those very schools. During this time she has had several opportunities to grow both professionally and personally. "I have been the Learning Through Doing (LTD) Mathematics leader at our school since 2023 and have had the opportunity to lead staff meetings and offer support to staff across the school in implementing the LTD program." Annabella's biggest achievement to date was winning Primary Educator of the Year in 2023. • This week is National Skills Week which highlights the talent, skills and career pathways made possible through Vocational Education Training (VET). VET is delivered in many ways, providing students with the opportunity to gain hands on learning in a real work setting across many industries, including trades, business, hospitality, agriculture and more. Former and current Taminmin College students, Renee and Jorja chose a VET pathway through a work experience with Northern Territory based airline Airnorth. Their hard work and commitment have led them to employment within the industry where they are both working exceptionally well. A terrific example of the endless opportunities VET provides. Great work girls! #VET #Airnorth #NationalSkillsWeek
