About us

The City of Darebin is the local government for Melbourne's inner northern suburbs of Northcote and Fairfield, out to the traditional middle ring suburbs of Reservoir and Bundoora and includes Alphington (part), Kingsbury, Macleod (part), Preston, Reservoir and Thornbury. Darebin is home to one of the largest, most diverse communities anywhere in the State in terms of cultures, language (more than 118 languages are spoken), religions, socio-economic background, employment status, occupation, and housing needs. We actively represent our community’s diversity and aim to create an inclusive work environment that values the contribution of all employees and treats all employees with dignity and respect. We are leaders in Environmental Sustainability and Social Justice, often collaborating with neighbouring municipalities to promote awareness and encourage community participation. We also provide flexible working arrangements and excellent working conditions that are supported across the organisation. Darebin City Council is one of the largest employers in the municipality with an operating expenditure budget $120 million and capital expenditure budget of $37 million. Darebin has a population of over 144,000 and we are also home to two significant tertiary organisations well serviced by public transport. August 7 is Aged Care Employee Day, a day when we appreciate the hard work done by our aged care heroes and thank them for their dedication and compassion. Darebin’s Care Support Workers (CSWs) work tirelessly every day to ensure older members of the community have a great quality of life and that their needs are looked after. Lee-Ann, a Darebin Community Support Worker, loves her job, and says no two days are the same. When asked why she chose to become a carer, she says, “I love working with people and making a difference. And it is rewarding to support people to stay as independent as possible in their own homes’. Lee-Ann grew up in Darebin, and says it is home to her. In addition to the enjoyable chats and stories she hears from older members of the community she cares for, she also feels very supported in her role, saying “We CSWs get amazing support from the office, it makes such a difference. This is why I love working for Darebin Council”. Gay is one older community member that Lee-Ann has been looking after over the past 3 years. She says that in addition to supporting her at home every week, Lee-Ann has “a great personality, and we often have a laugh”. Thank you Lee-Ann for all that you do, and for making Darebin such a great place to live – not only for our older community members, but for all members of the Darebin community! Thank you Lee-Ann for making Darebin such a great place to live for older community members!
