#DYK that urban areas around the world are grappling with interconnected crises: climate change and the global housing crisis? According to The World Cities Report (WCR) 2024 (https://bit.ly/3UH1GRc) : ⭕ Over 2 billion city dwellers could face an additional temperature increase of at least 0.5 degrees Celsius by 2040. ⭕36% of the global urban population might experience average annual temperatures of 29 degrees Celsius or higher. ⭕By 2040, more than 2,000 cities will be situated in low elevated coastal zones (below 5 meters above sea level), with populations currently totaling 1.4 billion and set to rise further. At the 12th World Urban Forum 12 Egypt, the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM) is hosting an Academia Roundtable titled “In the Eye of the Storm: Tackling the Urban Housing Crisis in the Face of Climate Change.” The event brings together experts to discuss how research and data guide solutions to climate-induced housing challenges, emphasizing strategies that align housing development with environmental sustainability and resilience for vulnerable communities. 🔴 Join the live session and be part of this crucial dialogue: https://lnkd.in/dQSG9XVQ UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) I #UrbanResilience I #ClimateAction I #SustainableCities I #ClimateChange #UrbanDevelopment I #ResilientCommunities I #UrbanPlanning

Congratulations to photographer Gabriela Calix. from the USAID Building Climate Resilience Activity—who has been named a 2024 Climatelinks photo contest winner. In the photo, a Cooperativa Agropecuaria Nuevo Edén Limitada facilitator measures water quality in Santa Inés, Honduras. Increased rainfall, flooding, and temperature changes due to climate change can lead to contamination or reduced water quality but with regular monitoring, communities can detect and address issues promptly. The communities are currently restoring watershed function, identifying point pollution, and ensuring a safe water supply despite challenges posed by extreme weather. An initiative implemented by the USAID Trade Central Asia activity has directly assisted 65 businesses across Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan. These enterprises are now exporting to new markets in Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, where they have secured 16 contracts totaling $6.9 million. Beyond these statistics are improved qualities of life for rural citizens and inspiration for countless other would-be entrepreneurs looking to join Central Asia’s small business sector. Opening new markets stimulates beekeeping’s development in the Kyrgyz Republic, motivating local producers to create environmentally friendly natural honey and other related products. Here's the story of one beekeeper: https://buff.ly/3UebEta
