Cooperatives & Financial Awareness
About us
Cufa builds economic resilience in the Asia-Pacific region through a three pillar strategy empowering marginalised communities and people to: (1) earn: through developing stronger cooperatives and job pathways; (2) save: through greater financial awareness; and (3) invest: through access to digital tools and diverse finance sources. With the generous support of our donors and volunteers, and through our teams in Cambodia and PNG and consultants in the wider region, we work with partners and stakeholders to address and overcome the causes of poverty.

Today the Cufa #Cambodia team, led by RANY TENG and Raksmey Phorn, welcomed a senior delegation from the Australian Embassy led by H.E Ambassador Derek Yip, accompanied by Ms Carolyn Bagster (First Secretary, Trade and Investment) and Ms Emily Sandilands, First Secretary (Political). We showcased our Australian-NGO Cooperation Program (#ANCP) funded work - the Australian Social Program for Inclusive Rural Enterprise (ASPIRE) and our activity with the Satrey Me Phtas Soap Cooperative Social Enterprise (CSE) in Tbong Khmum Province. This CSE was established in November 2021 and they receive regular capacity training in the areas of soap production, entrepreneurial skills, bookkeeping and financial literacy. There are 10 active members, including 5 women and 1 male living with a disability. In 2024, CUFA collaborated with another DFAT program - Regional Trade for Development (RT4D) - to support this CSE in applying for a trademark registration. They now have a registered trademark valid for 10 years until June 2034, provided by the Department of Intellectual Property in the Royal Cambodian Ministry of Commerce. And check out the brand new Cufa t-shirts too! #inclusivegrowth #socialimpact #ruraldevelopment #endpoverty

In more exciting news to kick-start 2025, the Cufa Board and Management is excited to welcome our inaugural volunteers through our newest partner, The Observership Program! We consider ourselves very fortunate to be hosting not one but two observers this year! Please welcome to the family 👇 - Jessica Mony, who will bring her skills and expertise in both international development and philanthropic engagement; and - Muriel Mallet, who will offer significant experience in, and a passion for, contemporary fundraising approaches. This year will present various opportunities for growth and learning for our two Board Observers as we embark on some major new initiatives. We can't wait for them to join us at our first Board meeting in March! #welcometotheteam #goodgovernance #socialimpact #inclusivefinance

Time for some end-of-year inspiration! This past week our Cufa ASPIRE team facilitated quarterly training in rural #Cambodia with 13 members of our partner Cooperative Social Enterprises (CSEs), including 6 women living with disabilities in Kampong Cham province. We further delivered financial literacy training for 26 community members in neighbouring Tbong Khmum province. Our thanks to the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for making this possible through funding under the Australian-NGO Cooperation Program (#ANCP). #socialimpact #makeadifference #cooperatives #ruraldevelopment #inclusivegrowth #Australianaid

Congratulations to Sharon Kama, an intern from our Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada funded Pathways Unlocked project in #PNG earlier this year. #bethechange #makeadifference #socialimpact #inclusionmatters
Sharon Kama, the leader of Deaf Youths at the Papua New Guinea Deaf Association, attended an event for the first time, specifically during the European Union Green Diplomacy Week, and it was a significant experience for her. "I've gained so much from this opportunity and experience. I really hope to see more young people with disabilities involved in programs like this in the future. I only ask that we be included in such initiatives in the future," she shared. She added, "This is my first time participating in an event centered on environmental education, particularly about trees and plants. Although I've learned a bit about conservation before, being here today has deepened my interest in environmental conservation and the effects of climate change." Ms. Kama also highlighted the importance of creating spaces that promote equal participation for individuals with disabilities alongside their peers in tackling climate change and environmental issues. — Visit our website to learn more about us: fccbpng.eu #EU #EUinPNG #EUFCCB #youthleadership #InclusiveParticipation #EmpowermentForAll #BreakingBarriers #AccessibilityMatters #DisabilityInclusion #WomenInclusion #YouthEmpowerment #EqualOpportunitiesForAll #InclusionMatters European Union in Papua New Guinea Expertise France Alaric Vandenberghe Heang THY (Kim) Mirzohaydar Isoev Sam Moko Doe Kwarara

Yesterday the Cufa #Cambodia team supported two of our partner Cooperative Social Enterprises (CSEs) - the Vai Chlat Disabled Women Soap Community and the Srey Mephtas Soap Community - to participate in a significant ceremony with the Ministry of Commerce in Phnom Penh. Through a regional economic program funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia's Deputy Ambassador Andreas Zurbrugg and senior officials from the Department of Intellectual Property provided each CSE with a formal certificate of trademark registration, with validity from June 2024 to June 2034. #socialimpact #inclusivegrowth #makeadifference #endpovertynow

In another exciting announcement to close out 2024, Cufa has forged a new partnership with The Observership Program in connection with the Australian Institute of Company Directors. The Observership Program facilitates the involvement of young, talented and energetic individuals in a structured experience on non-profit and government appointed Boards. Each Observer is paired with an organisation for a 12-month period and attends all board meetings as a non-voting member to learn about fundamental principles and functions of not-for-profit boards, the roles of board members, fiscal processes and other governance priorities. The Program provides Observers with first-hand exposure to the role of the board and its decision-making and operations. We can't wait to welcome our first observer in 2025! Cufa is excited to wrap up 2024 by announcing our exciting new three year partnership with The International Alliance for Women (TIAW)! Together we will help address gender inequality in #PNG through our high impact 'Gender Potential Unlimited’ project, which will engage female school leavers from Year 10 and above to develop the job-ready skills necessary for a successful transition from school to work.
