The heat is on. 🌡️ Australia’s land has warmed by 1.5 degrees Celsius since 1910, with ocean temperatures up 1.08 degrees Celsius since 1900. These increases have been revealed in the 2024 State of the Climate report, produced with the Bureau of Meteorology. Our land and seas are at record levels of heat, bringing: 🔥 More extreme fire seasons 🌊 Warming oceans and rising sea levels 💧 Diverging rainfall patterns, with drier conditions in the south and wetter conditions in the north. As warming continues, we must work to reduce emissions and support ecosystems to face the challenges ahead. Happy Birthday Murriyang, 63 years young! 🎂 📆 Murriyang, our Parkes radio telescope began exploring the universe on this day in 1961. 📡 Our advances in software and engineering across the decades makes Murriyang one of the best single-dish radio telescopes in the world! ☄️ Used to discover fast radio bursts, monitoring pulsars and supporting space missions, it’s been a pioneering force in global science and inspiring stargazers everywhere. 📍 The site on Wiradjuri Country was chosen for the telescope due to its stable climate and location – close enough to town but far enough to keep things quiet. 📸 The Governor-General of Australia (centre) greets guests at the telescope’s 1961 opening ceremony. A weed that’s bad to the bone. 🦴 Skeleton weed is a nightmare. It reduces crop yields. But, with Department of Primary Industries & Regional Development, we’ve researched and released a tiny midge to help tackle this serious weed in Western Australia. These beneficial insects are natural weed warriors which feed on skeleton weed. These mighty midges have been used in eastern Australia since the 1970s, but now they’ve arrived in Western Australia. We’re monitoring how they spread and their effects on this weed. Find out more about this work: http://spr.ly/6044SurQk

Lighting the way to fire safety. 🚒 justin leonard leads our Bushfire Adaptation research and has been with us since he finished uni over 30 years ago. Justin and his team were given the royal treatment after His Majesty King Charles III visited our National Bushfire Behaviour Research Laboratory in Canberra last week. But for Justin, the highlight of his career has been helping develop fire truck protection systems that have a 100 per cent success rate for protecting crews caught in bushfires. Taking flexible solar out of the lab and into the real world. 🥼 We're excited to announce that we've opened a new facility in Clayton, Victoria, to produce our printed flexible solar technology. Unlike traditional silicon solar panels, our flexible solar cells are printed on thin plastic films, unlocking entirely new applications for affordable, versatile and sustainable energy generation. Through our new Printed Photovoltaic (PV) Facility, industry partners can access both researcher expertise and specialised equipment to improve and apply flexible solar technology. The future of environmental genomics. 🧬 Some of our amazing genomics researchers gathered near Brisbane earlier this week. They were there for the Environomics FSP Science Meeting 2024 to talk about what’s next for biodiversity genomics in Australia! Across two days, the team attended presentations on the latest environmental monitoring research trends including new models developed to predict species' age, and new approaches helping us better-understand wildlife numbers and dispersion. Their work is helping us better manage our natural environment for the future. Find out more about their work: https://lnkd.in/g9zsH4Vr

Taking renewable-powered manufacturing to Mars! 🚀 We have been supporting world-leading decarbonisation work at Mars Petcare Wodonga in Victoria. After a multi-year collaboration with our Energy team, Mars has announced that its petfood facility at Wodonga will switch to 100 per cent renewable power by 2026 through a mix of solar and thermal energy technologies and hydrogen. This is an Australian first for a large steam-based manufacturing site! It's a great example of how we're collaborating with industry to help Australia reach our net zero emissions targets.
