Join us at 4pm today, for MECLA's Spotlight on Ways Forward with Trees 🌳, where our very own Darren Minto, along with a collection of experts in native forest science, agroforestry, architecture and timber manufacturing will discuss the complexities and challenges of the decarbonisation of the construction sector. The good news? We can make a difference, right now. And we are excited to share how. Link to register below. See you then!

🌳Wood products are widely viewed as one of the key solutions to decarbonising the construction sector. The timber industry is a complex ecosystem spanning forestry through to engineered products manufacturing. 🌳 🌴 As the ways we manufacture, design and work with wood continue to develop in Australia, so too do methods in management of naturally regenerating and purposefully planted forests. And new questions around carbon accounting for the forest industry are being asked. 🌴 🌲In MECLA’s Spotlight on Ways Forward with Trees, a collection of experts in native forest science, agroforestry, timber product manufacturing and architecture come together to explore how this ecosystem is evolving, and to discuss some positive directions forward for Australia’s timber industry in the context of a climate and biodiversity emergency.🌲 Presenters will include: Paul Haar - Architect and Honorary Principal Fellow in the School of Architecture and Building at the University of Melbourne Patrick Baker - Professor of Silviculture and Forest Ecology in the School of Ecosystem and Forest Sciences at the University of Melbourne Mark Wootton - Owner of Jigsaw Farms Daniel Wright - Director and National Business Development Manager at Australian Sustainable Hardwoods Darren Minto - Client Relationship Manager at Crafted Hardwoods

In today’s landscape, specifying timber in a building project carries more risk due to supply uncertainty and price volatility. As a renewable, low-carbon, non-toxic and recyclable material, timber plays an important role in sustainable architecture. However, given recent shortages and price increases, the design and construction industry is starting to recognise that timber may be a finite resource if we do not learn how to use it more wisely. In a new White Paper from Crafted Hardwoods they discuss the current state of the timber market in Australia and explore how a pioneering technology that converts sustainably sourced, low-value pulp grade resources into premium hardwoods could be a viable solution to timber shortages. 🌲 Can timber construction overcome its growing pains? 👍 Well, we're somewhat biased on this topic and believe timber should be one of the first solutions considered for a large number of buildings, but the article raises some key topics to address when you're considering a timber structure. https://lnkd.in/dAKxh29E 🔥 Fire - There are many practical steps that can be taken in a timber building to mitigate fire risks. At a basic level designing timber sections for charring to provide the required fire-resistance level (FRL) or applying protective coverings to further enhance performance are two possible responses. However, a more sophisticated response is often required looking at the dynamics of the fire itself within a compartment where the structure itself can contribute to the fire load. One potential design consideration could be to tune the design to give the fire an opportunity to burn itself out. Once the energy of the fire reaches a certain level the timber has the potential to self-extinguish, but careful specification (particularly timber species) and care around detailing (to avoid voids and pockets where timber can continue to smoulder) are necessary. 🌱 Sustainability - There is much debate around sustainability of building products and there are so many entrenched opinions on all sides that we won't try to dig into it all on this post. The main point raised in the article is around the overall replanting of resources and while it's likely true that on a global scale humans are probably cutting down more than they're replanting, it highlights a need for specifiers to be really clear where their products are coming from and only use materials from a reputable source with the relevant certification credentials. ☔ Water/durability - There are plenty of solutions for waterproofing of timber buildings, but in reality the problem often lies in the execution of those solutions. Giving your timber buildings a robust 'boot, coat and hat' is a great start but ensuring that the specification and suitability of those products is critical At Arboralis we recommend that clients undertake a Moisture in Design or MID strategy (we're going to keep using this until it catches on!) for projects to identify those high-risk areas and potentially allow for secondary or even tertiary protective systems to ensure that the timber remains dry for its lifetime. ❓ So what do you think? Can timber overcome its growing pains? What more can we be doing collectively to better solve some of the challenges? 📢 Anyone interested in this space would be welcome to join Timber DiaLog to keep the conversations going and learn together with other passionate people. Wait, WHAT?! Timber is generally divided into three categories, sawn timber, veneer, and pulpwood. Pulpwood is the lowest-grade product among the three, and in most cases, it is the most abundant product in the forest. In fact, in Australia and many other countries, it is common for nearly HALF of all trees in a forest to go towards pulp uses. (source: FAOSTAT) Trees that are too small for sawn timber gets classified as pulp automatically. Even mature, high-value trees are often sold as pulpwood if their quality is too undesirable. For example, a tree with too many holes, knots and limbs will be unusable for saw timber but will qualify as pulpwood.   These trees would traditionally head straight to the wood chipper.   Whilst they may be low-value to others, to us, they have so much potential.   We have the technology to divert them from ending up in a woodchips pile and turn them instead into beautiful solid hardwood timbers, giving them a new life with unsurpassed value-add. If you haven't already, head to our website to watch the magic happens! https://lnkd.in/eny6_vx9   #sustainability #innovation #solution
