On Wednesday, Colac Otway Shire Council proudly hosted Corangamite Shire Council and Surf Coast Shire Council for the 2024 collaborative Emergency Relief Centre (ERC) exercise. This annual event reinforces our commitment to community safety and preparedness. Each year, our dedicated council staff join forces with local relief agencies, including Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, Red Cross, the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing, and Emergency Recovery Victoria. Together, we train to ensure we’re ready to open and operate relief centres in times of crisis. In recent years, we’ve successfully activated and supported ERCs during significant emergencies like the 2015 Boxing Day and 2018 St Patrick’s Day fires, which impacted communities across South West Victoria. This year’s exercise was particularly impactful, focusing cultural safety, inclusivity and accessibility at ERCs. Our guest presenters delivered insightful workshops on supporting culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, individuals with disabilities, First Nations people, youth, and gender inclusivity. Together, we’re building a resilient and inclusive community, ready to face any challenge. 

We had the incredible privilege of welcoming the Commissioner for Gender Equality in the Public Sector, Dr Niki Vincent and Kate Farhall, Manager Policy, Evidence and Insights at the Commission to our organisation. It was a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable insights into the Commissioner’s innovative approach to promoting gender equality. Connecting on a more personal level with both the Commissioner and Kate Farhall was truly inspiring.
