Updates

  • The City is 'Planning Sustainable Stirling' and has prepared a new draft Local Planning Scheme No. 4 (LPS4) to guide development of the City’s growing and diverse community. This is the City's opportunity to simplify the planning rule book as we listen and respond to our community's priorities for their homes, businesses and local areas. By updating the planning framework we can better plan for our growing population, offer more housing options, and meet state housing targets. The launch event, held on Thursday 24 October from 4.00pm - 6.00pm at the City of Stirling Main Reception Hall, is a great opportunity to discuss the new scheme with City Planner's in an informal expo-style information session. The City is planning a range of events to share information about the draft LPS4 before the advertising period finishes on Friday 24 January 2025. • Over the past three years, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) and Geoscience Australia have been working together on the Tsunami Inundation Modelling and Mapping Project. This initiative aims to develop an updated model of the potential impacts of coastal inundation along Western Australia’s (WA) coastline. DFES recently held a Tsunami Evacuation Map Development Workshop for metropolitan local governments at the City of Stirling. The workshop focused on Tsunami safe locations and evacuation routes. DFES invited local governments to review preliminary maps and use their local knowledge to identify any vulnerable infrastructure and industries, and potential tsunami evacuation challenges. Representatives from Town of Cambridge, Town of East Fremantle, City of Joondalup, Town of Mosman Park, City of Wanneroo, and the Department of Communities WA participated. This workshop was a collaborative effort to help identify risks and enhance community preparedness. Thank you to all who were involved!

  • Last month, members from the City of Stirling Horticultural Services team attended the Everlastings Kings Park Festival, an annual event that celebrates the extraordinary diversity and beauty of Western Australia's famous wildflowers throughout September. It was great to learn from ABC Radio Perth’s Michael Tetlow and horticultural expert Sabrina Hahn, who offered a wealth of knowledge about Everlastings, a unique and vibrant wildflower. Through attending this event, the team learnt the importance of biodiversity and conservation, and how planting water-wise native gardens benefits wildlife. They also gained a better understanding on how to maintain native plants and are eager to apply their learnings to their daily roles here at the City.

  • We're rolling out eSwitch controllers at active sport reserves across the City! Last week, we were at Charles Riley Reserve in North Beach to demonstrate and understand how the new system will work. eSwitch is an online sports lighting management system that will allow the City and user groups, predominantly sports clubs, to access a smartphone app via a secure login to operate the floodlights at sports reserves. The eSwitch will mean more flexibility for clubs, improve on sustainability, and cost savings by only using the lights when needed. By January 2025, all installations will be complete and approved clubs and user groups will be contacted by the City for training and support.

  • We're excited to share that Stage 1 of landscape upgrades to Joondanna Reserve are complete! The City engaged with the local community ahead of works commencing to seek input on the design and we collaborated with year 6 students from Tuart Hill Primary School to select the playground equipment which directly shaped the final design. The new works include new footpaths, a refurbished gazebo, new BBQ, a new playground equipped with a flying fox, small permanent soccer goal, park furniture, parking bays, new signage and the planting of over 3,000 shrubs and groundcovers, plus another 27 trees. Future stages will involve a lighting upgrade and the installation of public amenities in 2025. We’d like to give thanks to the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts for their $500,000 grant which helped fund this project.

  • We've upgraded the sports and recreation floodlighting at Millington Reserve in Karrinyup! The new energy-efficient LED lighting produces 100-Lux levels, increasing the brightness of the old metal halide lights. The new lighting meets the Australian Standards and now delivers better training and evening match play opportunities to support the growing participation for the sport. The upgrades are a more direct and energy efficient approach to lighting the sports field, which means better visibility and a more enjoyable experience for both Junior and Senior AFL clubs as well as the wider community. This project was part of the City's 2023/24 annual budget for sports lighting reserve improvements and an additional $50,000 contributed by the State Government through an election commitment from Stuart Aubrey MLA and Member for Scarborough. The City is sad to advise that Mr Ralph Fardon OAM, former City of Stirling CEO, has passed away. Ralph was a passionate advocate for local government, and someone who always strived to help others. Throughout his distinguished career, Ralph served as CEO for two of Western Australia’s largest councils – the City of Stirling from 1986 to 1991 and the City of Melville. He concluded his career as CEO of the Mindarie Regional Council in February 1998. He was a pillar of the local government community and his commitment to the sector was reflected in his numerous roles and achievements. From all of us at the City of Stirling, we send our deepest condolences to Ralph's family during this difficult time.

  • The Robertsbridge Reserve clubroom upgrades in Nollamara are now complete, thanks to the City's partnership with the Australian Government to bring essential community infrastructure to life. These upgrades will not only benefit the local Bandits Softball Club as they aim to grow junior and female participation but will also improve the recreational experience for the broader community. The new design features include improved social spaces, toilet amenity, kitchen and storage as well as modern universal changerooms. We'd like to thank the Australian Government for contributing $125,000 through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program. 👏
