It is home to a diverse community of about 83,600 people and has a dynamic local economy, employing almost 67,000 people with a gross regional product of $9.084 billion. Yarra City Council was formed in 1994 following the amalgamation of the cities of Richmond, Collingwood, Fitzroy and part of Carlton North, formerly part of the City of Melbourne, and parts of Alphington and Fairfield, previously part of the former City of Northcote. Yarra's 19.5 square kilometres include the suburbs of Abbotsford, Burnley, Clifton Hill, Collingwood, Cremorne, Fitzroy, North Carlton, North Fitzroy, Princes Hill and Richmond. Parts of Alphington and Fairfield - south of Heidelberg Road - are also included in Yarra. The Wurundjeri-willam people of the Kulin Nation are the Traditional Owners of the land that is now known as the City of Yarra and Council recognises them as the custodians of the cultural heritage of this land The administration of Council is spread across three historic town halls, including Richmond Town Hall in Bridge Road, Fitzroy Town Hall in Napier Street and Collingwood Town Hall in Hoddle Street. Council also provides customer service from the Connie Benn Centre at 160 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy. The community is represented by nine councillors. The municipality is broken up into three geographic wards - Langridge Ward, Melba Ward and Nicholls Ward - each of which is represented by three Councillors. This week, Victoria University, in collaboration with the Ethnic Communities' Council of Victoria and the Islamic Council of Victoria, launched their comprehensive and vital report, "Understanding Reporting Barriers and Support Needs for Those Experiencing Racism in Victoria," at the Reading Room of the Fitzroy Town Hall. We are proud to embrace and celebrate our diverse community and their contributions to the culture and identity of Yarra. We stand with our community and remain committed to working with our diverse community to understand their needs and experiences, and to taking action to end racism in all its forms.

ECCV was pleased to be part of the launch today of an important new report, which looks at ways to improve reporting pathways and support services for Victorians who experience racism. Startlingly, the report found that the vast majority of racist incidents in our state go unreported. The ‘Understanding reporting barriers and support needs for those experiencing racism in Victoria’ report is the result of a research project led by Victoria University Associate Professor Mario Peucker in collaboration with ECCV and the Islamic Council of Victoria, with support from Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth). ECCV Deputy Co-Chair Gabrielle Marchetti addressed the launch, describing the report as a "vital catalyst for change" and calling on decision-makers to put the report's recommendations into action. This was echoed by ICV President Adel Salman who emphasised the need for urgent action on anti-racism, especially at a systemic and institutional level. We also heard from one of the report's co-authors Franka Vaughan, PhD as well as responses to the report from Andrew Gardner of Victoria Police, Celia Chang of Hume City Council, Victoria University Professor Khalid Moinuddin, representatives of the Victorian Equal Opportunity & Human Rights Commission as well as community leaders Mursha Dalay-on, PhD of Foundation House Victoria (VFST Inc.) and Mubarek Imam of Young Assets Foundation Inc. Thank you to Wurundjeri Elder Uncle Tony Garvey for generously welcoming us to Country, and Amani Nyikang from Yarra City Council for facilitating this morning's thought-provoking event. More than 20 years ago, the Merri Creek Labyrinth was created by local community members as a contemplative and peaceful place to connect with nature. 🌱🌳 With support from our Annual Grants program, the volunteer-run group have been able to help grow and sustain the Labyrinth through their restoration project. Over 40 people attended the most recent Community Planting Day, planting native plants and shrubs in the area with supervision from bushland restoration experts Felix Botanica. The Friends of the Merri Creek Labyrinth restoration project doesn’t just enhance our natural environment and support biodiversity, but also fosters community bonds, preserves local heritage and strengthens our connection to nature and wellbeing. 💰 Do you need funding for a local project, initiative, or event? Each year in Yarra, we come together to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and achievements during #NAIDOCWeek. 🖤💛❤️ This year, we’re also encouraging our community to support the path to Treaty in Victoria by engaging with organisations like the First Peoples' Assembly of Victoria and Yoorrook Justice Commission. There’s plenty of local NAIDOC celebrations to get involved in this week, including a Family Day at Collingwood Children's Farm presented by Aboriginal Housing Victoria, Victorian Aboriginal Health Service's Annual NAIDOC march and Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO)’s NAIDOC Week celebration.
