Last week, Council's Waste Services Team Leader Tony Barca presented at the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Congress 2024. Tony spoke about Greater Dandenong's 'Keep it Clean' Community Education, Engagement and Awareness campaign and participated in discussions around waste disposal strategies and best practice approaches to environmental stewardship. The event was a great way for experts, advocates, policymakers, and industry leaders to get together and address litter head-on.

We are excited to announce that the City of Greater Dandenong has joined eight other councils in Melbourne’s south east to to enter a Waste Supply Agreement with Maryvale EfW Project Co Pty Ltd (a consortium between Veolia Australia and New Zealand, Opal Australian Paper, and Masdar Tribe Australia) to send waste to an advanced waste processing facility in Maryvale in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley. At least 95 per cent of household waste from the nine councils involved will be diverted from landfill and used to create a valuable energy source. City of Greater Dandenong Mayor, Councillor Lana Formoso said local residents and communities across the south east region would benefit from the agreement.   “By working together, we will reduce landfill, slash greenhouse gas emissions, create a valuable energy source and provide employment across the region,” Cr Formoso said.    With household waste in Melbourne’s south east projected to increase by 40 per cent by 2046, alternatives to landfill need to be found. The last remaining landfill in the south east of Melbourne will close in the next few years. This project will ensure that residents’ waste is used to create a valuable energy source for an important industry in the Latrobe Valley.    Find out more on our website, https://lnkd.in/gZjYCuCZ

Last night our Mayor, Cr Lana Formoso and CEO Jacqui Weatherill (pictured with Bevan Warner and Adam Zaccaria from Launch Housing) attended a National Homelessness Week event hosted by Melbourne Zero to launch a brilliant new mural by artist Adnate located in Albion Alley in Melbourne's CBD.    The event was attended by Harriet Shing, Minister for Housing, and Nick Reece, Lord Mayor of the City of Melbourne (pictured with Cr Lana Formoso and Bevan Warner), who shared their support for our collaborative efforts and the growing momentum towards ending rough sleeping in Melbourne by 2030.    Our Dandenong Zero project aims to reduce the number of people experiencing rough sleeping by connecting with and getting to know each person and adding them to the local ‘By Name List’. Knowing everyone by name, understanding their needs and providing a client-centred approach helps to build trust and supports people to find and sustain housing.
