Albany's Mounts precinct will soon be connected to the town centre via a shared path, facilitating a safe and accessible route for active transport users. The City of Albany was successful in securing funding from the Department of Transport’s Western Australian Bicycle Network grants program to support construction of the Marine Drive Mounts Access Pathway. The pathway will allow individuals to walk, wheel or ride across town, along Brunswick Street up to Apex Drive traversing through Marine Drive and Forts Road, aligning with the Mounts Master Plan. This new path link will significantly improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists and establish a crucial connection for visitors commuting from the Port or CBD to the esteemed National Anzac Centre. Scheduled to commence construction in January and conclude by late April 2024, the City anticipates the positive impact this path will have on community safety, connectivity, and well-being. Since the completion of ANZAC Peace Park in 2010, the City has faced the challenge of managing a limited water supply to keep the turf looking lush and green. After 12-months of water quality and flow testing investigation, a fantastic solution has emerged! It turns out there's a stormwater base flow right near the park, so the City’s innovative engineering team and reticulation gurus teamed up with local contractors and have found a way to put it to great use. Introducing our new water harvesting system! A barrier has been installed in the stormwater system, guiding the water through a redundant drainage pipe to an unused drainage basin at ANZAC Peace Park. This basin has become home to two interconnected water tanks, turning stormwater into a reliable irrigation system. The City is now using a water supply that would have otherwise gone straight out to sea! This smart and sustainable solution ensures our beloved park stays green and thriving while making the most of our natural resources. We are thrilled to see innovation, conservation, and a greener ANZAC Peace Park!
