Congratulations Burnie! A dedicated team of Burnie parents, carers, and services, with support from Burnie Works, has been busy preparing for a Burnie Middle Years Hub. Pictured: some Primary Years Action Group members met today to launch the Expression of Interest (EOI), asking for a local service to help us staff and deliver a Hub in Burnie. As of 2025, Burnie will have its own service and activity Hub for primary school-aged children and families (with other children in the family welcome, too). We’ll have group programs, information, places to connect, and things for the whole family to do. Better yet, it will be free. It’ll be open one day per week and will run for the whole year. Watch this space for more details, or call Project Lead Kira on 0491 176 751 if you want to know more. Download the EOI Guidelines and Application Form on the link below. https://lnkd.in/gunj9dZP

🧐Burnie Knowledge Time Machine💡 Have you done research in or about Burnie or North West Tasmania more broadly? We would love to see it! Burnie Works is a collective action organisation focused on community-led social services reform (families, education, employment, housing, children and young people, justice, health etc.) in Burnie, Tasmania. As a region often identified as having a low socio-economic profile, Burnie and North West Tasmania have been the context for a considerable amount of social and economic research. We recognise that some of this research is sensitive and has been decontextualised. However, consultation and research fatigue in Burnie are real, and we think it’s important to collate the existing body of knowledge about this place. Our aim is to create an archive of research published since 2000 so future projects can build on what is already known and tried here. Please send your publications or any questions to [email protected] if you can assist. #research #knowledge #burnie #nwtasmania

Burnie Works exists to help the Burnie community make changes that improve lives. We do this by walking alongside community, ensuring every voice, no matter how quiet, is valued and heard in our mission to bring about positive change. We know that when we build the knowledge, skills, and experience of the people in Burnie, we strengthen our ability to drive positive change together. To help do this, we have designed a program to deliver Community Capability Building workshops for our community – get ready for an incredible twelve months of community empowerment in Burnie! The program consists of several workshops. Each is aimed at building people’s knowledge, skills and abilities. The program includes topics such as diversity and inclusion, community leadership, understanding generations, advocacy, power dynamics, and local data; how to collect it, how to use it, and why. These topics have been carefully selected based on our experience, conversations with community, and valuable feedback from past workshop participants. We have also chosen topics that align with our organisational goals and values. Burnie Works Chair Jacqueline de Jonge said, “We are incredibly grateful that our community has received funding for such an important program. When we learn together, we can apply what we’ve learned together. We can move forward with a shared aspiration and plan for change.” The Burnie Works team is eager to connect with new and familiar faces and is excited about the opportunity to learn and grow together to create positive change. Get on the mailing list to receive invitations to workshops when registrations open https://lnkd.in/gzsdewwq We are fortunate to be able to deliver this program thanks to funding from the Australian Government and the Stronger Places, Stronger People initiative. It acknowledges the urgent and growing need for inclusive engagement, local leadership and governance in communities. #burnie #burnieworks #capabilitybuilding #knowledge #skills #ability #strongerplacesstrongerpeople #diversity #inclusion #powerdynamics #communityleadership #understandinggenerations #advocacy #data #positivechange

On Sunday 21 July, a Children’s Exhibition was held in Burnie. It brought together children and young people who have participated in the Australian National University’s More for Children research project over the past two and a half years in North West Tasmania. On behalf of our partners, we would like to express the deepest thanks to the children, young people, and their families for sharing their ideas, experiences, and priorities for change. Thank you also to the Commissioner for Children and Young People, Izzy Crompton, for opening the Exhibition and to the Burnie Child and Family Learning Centre for hosting the event. It was wonderful to see the newly formed Primary Years Action Group speak about their work on the Middle Years Family Support project. ⭐About the program More for Children is a program of transformative research that aims to contribute to child-inclusive communities by understanding what makes life good and what makes life tough for children. The research also aims to understand children’s experiences of poverty in order to act. It is driven by the vision that all children have the material basics, opportunities now and into the future, and strong and supportive relationships. Currently, Australia is far from achieving that vision, with one in six children living in income poverty. More for Children aims to provide a knowledge base for change. The communities involved in the research were selected because the Children’s Policy Centre had strong relationships with local partners. Each community has remarkable assets and strengths, not least the commitment of many individuals and organisations in the local community to ensuring that all children and their families are well supported. We encourage the Burnie community to read the More for Children report. The report includes some difficult issues but is important and powerful reading. This report is written for an adult audience (a children’s booklet will be available online in August). Download the report https://lnkd.in/gXf3ZDjr Next Steps: ➡ANU will be sharing the research on a national level to inform decision-making. ➡Burnie Works are now actively strategizing on how to incorporate this very important research into our work. ➡Burnie Works will share the research, starting by facilitating the sharing of some themes from the research with the Burnie City Youth Council at an upcoming meeting. ➡ANU are looking for fathers and male caregivers to interview as part of further research. The research was funded by the Paul Ramsay Foundation and conducted in partnership with FamilyCare in Shepparton, Victoria, and Burnie Works in Burnie, Tasmania. #MoreforChildren #ANU #BurnieWorks #PaulRamsayFoundation #ChildrensPolicyCentre #Policy #Change #LivedExperience #Research

Embedding community stories and knowledge into our ‘way of working’ has significantly transformed the way we operate at Burnie Works. The Community Knowledge Collector project enabled us to do this. A Community Knowledge Collector is a person who takes an interest in their community and the opportunities and challenges it faces. We recruited Knowledge Collectors from the community and provided them with formal training, and they have been working with us on our projects. Having access to people’s stories has empowered us to shape our advocacy based on their voices. As a result, we now have the confidence that we are truly understanding the wants and needs of our community. It also allows decision-makers to access local knowledge collected in a trusted way, improving the decision-making process for Burnie. The Burnie Works Community Knowledge Collector Project was a pilot project funded by The Federal Government’s Stronger Places, Stronger People initiative. It ran from February 2022 to June 2024 and acknowledged the urgent and growing need to develop processes and methodologies for collecting community voices. The pilot has now been evaluated. Burnie Works is considering the evaluation report and is looking at the next steps. Burnie Works Chair Jacqueline de Jonge said, “Having Community Knowledge Collectors as a resource is important for our work. It allows communities to have the capacity and capability to understand what is occurring for themselves. It is an important piece of the puzzle. We have never had access to this kind and amount of qualitative information before.” ➡ Find out how we have been using people’s stories ➡ Read the evaluation report and recommendations ➡ Discover what we are planning for the future https://lnkd.in/gX9wPxsa #CommunityKnowledgeCollectorProject #StrongerPlacesStrongerPeople #BurnieWorks

This Sunday is National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day. A day to celebrate the strength and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. We support a world in which children are proud of their culture, empowered by their community and strong in their identity. To start the celebrations, Burnie Works went along to Pataway Collective's Kipli and Kani at the Burnie Child and Family Learning Centre this morning. There was so much fun with face painting, flag handprint canvases, sensory tubs, singing and dancing, drawing, sports games, building your own healthy snack, Legos, and natural contact collages. Thanks to the other services for helping us out with our activity, a special thanks to Tina from Communities for Children Burnie. Did you know? Tasmania has a fantastic learning research tool called The Orb. It features interviews with Tasmanian Aboriginal Community members and provides teachers with Australian curriculum-aligned resources to assist in the teaching of Tasmanian Aboriginal histories and cultures.
