Brown’s Mart announces the resignation of CEO Sophia Hall, who will step down from her role following the launch of their 2025 Program on 21 November 2024.   Sophia has made a considerable contribution to the organisation in her time with Brown’s Mart, working alongside the Board to develop the Brown’s Mart’s Strategic Plan 2024-28, establishing our First Nations Advisory Group and First Nations Community Engagement Program and securing significant Federal Government funding via Creative Australia from 2025-2028. These achievements have paved the way for the future of Brown’s Mart, as the home of Territory performing arts, and sit alongside funding secured from the Northern Territory Government as well as multi-year operational support from philanthropic organisation Tim Fairfax Family Foundation.   Sophia has led the organisation through a challenging time post-COVID and without federal funding. Thanks to her leadership, we look ahead with this funding resecured and a full, exciting 2025 program to be launched in November. We thank Sophia for her strong commitment, energy and contribution to Brown’s Mart during her tenure and wish her all the best in her future endeavours.   The Board will shortly commence a recruitment process for Sophia’s replacement. Should you be interested to find out more on this role or how you may be able to assist the organisation more broadly, please do not hesitate to contact the Brown’s Mart board via [email protected]

Cj Fraser-Bell is stepping down from their role as a Brown’s Mart Artistic Associate with today being their last day.   Cj has had a variety of roles at Brown’s Mart, most recently as Artistic Associate since 2022. Their contribution to Brown’s Mart has been considerable, marked by an ongoing care and advocacy for artists, particularly those at the beginning of their careers or working in independent practice. Most recently their contribution towards Brown’s Mart’s current identity and strategic direction has been substantial. They were instrumental in developing our new visual identity and the new strategic priorities as part of the 2024-2028 Strategic Plan. Performance Experiments is one program Cj has brought to Brown’s Mart which has already become a key part of our annual Performance Program.   Cj Fraser-Bell “Brown’s Mart has been my arts home for half my life, and while my involvement will change as I step down as an Artistic Associate, my belief in the importance of Brown’s Mart as an incubator for NT performance is steadfast. Our artists have vital things to say, and I look forward to being an audience member and collaborator in other ways moving forward.”   Brown’s Mart CEO Sophia Hall “On behalf of Brown’s Mart, I would like to thank Cj for their insight, knowledge, and thoughtfulness which, along with their commitment to artists and advocacy, have made an immeasurable impact. Whilst their departure from the team will be a loss for Brown’s Mart, Cj’s time at Brown’s Mart will definitely leave a legacy.”   Thank you, farewell and until next time Cj 🧡

After two years producing and two years as an Artistic Associate, I’m wrapping up my time in the office at beautiful Brown's Mart In this time, I was part of a brand refresh, re-built the website, helped write and then designed our new Strategic Plan, delivered new development and audience initiatives, worked on our first Equity and Inclusion plan, dramaturged, counselled, mediated, helped write our successful Creative Australia application for four year funding, launched programs AND drank lots of coffee - all with amazing co-conspirators in the office, throughout the NT, and across Aus! Although I’m stepping away from BM in this role, let’s be real, I’ll be back with a hair-brained scheme or an underfunded theater experiment before too long! In the meantime, I’ll be enjoying some downtime as well as joining the fab team at NT AIDS & Hepatitis Council Inc. for a project with ACON. We can’t wait to tell you about it 👀

Need some fun to end the week? The second and final Performance Experiment is on tonight at 7:30pm. These three artists have been in the Studio all week dreaming up and creating a brand new one night only show. Meet the artists: 🔸 Esther Dougherty is a playwright and theatre maker from Magandjin/Brisbane. They work in absurdism, comedy, experimental performance, and drag. Esther graduated a BFA - Drama from the QUT (Queensland University of Technology) in 2016. Since then, they have debuted four original plays, with one published in 2022. Esther's plays strange-make to truth-tell, and invite audiences into worlds of wonder, laughter and release. Esther performs in drag as Small Paul; creating performance art and hosting events. They are also the Artistic Director of Curtain World, the production company they founded in 2021 as a platform to independently present their plays and events. 🔸 Siobhan Gibbs is a performance artist working across theatre, queer club performance, events, and community work. Graduating QUT in 2017, Siobhan embarked on finding a space in the cracks of capitalism, burrowing down into creating art as revolution. Siobhan debuted her her solo work, SEWER RAT GIRL, in 2021 in Meanjin/Brisbane, and since has toured across 2022/2023 to Adelaide Fringe, The Sydney Fringe (nominated for Best Comedy), the Butterfly Club (Naarm), and Woodford Folk Festival. Siobhan’s club drag persona, Gogo Bumhole is queer, punk celebration of the femme body, performing on club and cabaret stages across the country. 🔸 IΩANNA, a Greek-Australian artist, blends traditional sculpture techniques with contemporary concepts. Her artistic journey spans studies in Italy, New York, international residencies and exhibitions. Based in the Northern Territory, IΩANNA delves into the convergence of nature and technology. She shares her practice through teaching metal casting using recycled aluminium, and showcasing the vitality of stone carving in live performances. IΩANNA's work captivates audiences with the brutal and beautiful potentialities of the future, mutated.
