Blackwoods recently partnered with the Queensland Mines Rescue Service as a sponsor of their annual QLD State Cup for 2024 held at Blackwater, the annual competition for underground mines in Queensland. Last Sunday morning, Blackwoods team members joined 14,813 runners and walkers in the annual Bridge to Brisbane run. This event supported our STEPember campaign, with Michael Robertsonb, Emmelia Armstrong, Kevin Schroder, Fiona Woodrow and Ann Kelly from Blackwoods participating in the 10km event. The team enjoyed the early morning exercise, with loads of musical entertainment. Fan favourites include the band atop the Gateway Bridge, the bagpipes on Kingsford Smith Drive, the Underground Opera in the tunnel, and the DJ spurring everyone on to the finish line. This event was a great opportunity to increase step count as well as strengthen workplace relationships. Last week, Blackwoods held a virtual session for Wear it Purple Day to raise awareness on creating a safe environment for LGBTIQA+ team members in our workplace through inclusive language and allyship. Kamerin Paniora, Talent Acquisition Partner and Andrew Bray, Chief Executive Officer facilitated this session and discussed this year’s Wear It Purple Day theme of ‘Your Passion, Your Pride’. They were joined by Matthew Ebert, National Sales Operations Manager and special guest, Jarrod Lomas from the LGBTQ Domestic Violence Awareness Foundation, who shared their stories on their connection to the LGBTIQA+ community. One key message we could all take away from the session was Jarrod's statement: “We all actually have a responsibility to step up here and take care of each other because change is not going to happen unless it starts with us.” This is a great reminder of the impact we can all have through our words and actions. Wesfarmers Industrial and Safety sponsored a Black Coffee Event in Boorloo last week, which was aimed to connect Indigenous businesses with procurement opportunities around Australia. Indigenous business owners and professionals, along with their supporters, got together to yarn with the aim to build relationships and grow networks. The event was a massive success with over 50 participants attending, with many familiar faces as well as quite a few first-timers coming together to engage with Indigenous businesses. A big thank you to Nicole Crnko (Grubb), for organising the fantastic event with the support of Bullivants and Blackwoods team members Scott Gundry, Rob Leitch and Timothy Klass. and to the talented Cat Holland for her photography on the day. Blackwoods and Bullivants team members hosted tables at the Clontarf Foundation Employment Forum in Blacktown last week, which was aimed at helping transition Indigenous high school students into meaningful employment. The event had over 100 students and 25 partner companies attending, and it was great to see the young men engaging with industry professionals and exploring potential career paths. Junathean Coady, Blackwoods team member and Clontarf Foundation alumni, was invited on to the panel to talk about his journey from School based trainee into full-time team member. Junathean also co-hosted the Blackwoods stand to talk to the young men about his lived experiences and how he was on their side of the table just a few short years ago. A huge thank you to Chris Bron and Adrian Doyle for organising the fantastic event at Workers Lifestyle Group. With the support of their families, their school, careers advisors, the Clontarf team and employer partners, the future is bright for these young people.
