The Big Issue is a social enterprise providing opportunities to people experiencing homelessness and marginalisation.

About us

The Big Issue is a not-for-profit social enterprise dedicated to supporting and creating job opportunities for people experiencing homelessness, disadvantage and marginalisation. What we do We run social enterprises to create work opportunities for people who are unable to access mainstream jobs. These enterprises operate much like traditional businesses, except all revenue is put back into the enterprises for the benefit of the individuals involved and broader community. Our social enterprises include The Big Issue magazine, the Women's Subscription Enterprise and The Big Issue Classroom. We also run the Community Street Soccer Program. Our social enterprises not only provide opportunities for people to earn an income, but importantly, to build confidence and their capacity to help themselves. The people we help come from a range of backgrounds including mental illness, homelessness, long-term unemployment, intellectual and physical disability and drug and alcohol dependency.

"Hey guys, after nine weeks recovering from a fractured left knee, I’m finally back at work selling The Big Issue. It’s been a journey getting better and I would like to thank everyone for their support: my customers, Big Issue staff and vendors, and my friends and family. Now it’s time to get back to spinning my magazines, counting down the lights for pedestrians crossing the road, and my volunteer work for V8 Supercars. Starting back at The Big Issue has put a smile on my face." Welcome back Glenn! ⭐ Visit Glenn at David Jones, Sydney. 📸 Michael Quelch

A big thank you to Laura Blindkilde Brown, Poppy Pritchard and Vivianne Miedema from Manchester City Football Club for visiting us at our Perth Street Soccer session! It was a wonderful afternoon for our Street Soccer players to hang out and play with such incredible professionals. Thank you also for donating a jersey and tickets to the upcoming games in Perth. The Big Issue Community Street Soccer Program is held all around Australia and helps people on the margins improve their lives through the power of sport. ⚽

"Last month, two of my customers bought me a jacket. It is a big navy puffer jacket. I have been using it all the time as it is nice and warm, and has big pockets that I use as my cash drawer for keeping change. This was such a nice gift, and I am so thankful for it as it keeps me warm on those really cold mornings at Southern Cross Station, where I feel the chilly breeze coming off Port Phillip Bay. It was also great when I went camping and when I went to the snow at Baw Baw. "When someone comes and buys a magazine off me or talks to me, I say thank you, as stuff like this means a lot and encourages me to keep going. Sometimes people buy me a coffee or food. I have been told by some of them that they do this because they see me rain, hail or shine. "I recently celebrated one year of returning to selling The Big Issue full time up at Southern Cross Station. Today, I have a loyal customer base and I have made a lot of friends along the way. I am thankful for everything: all the hellos and the great atmosphere it’s brought to my pitch." Chris sells The Big Issue magazine in Traralgon and at Southern Cross Station, Melbourne.

"I’m from South Africa. I was born in Johannesburg in 1953. It’s better to be here, because it’s safer. I lost both my parents in 1997. That’s when I came to Australia, on the 24th of September in 1997, when I was 44. My sisters brought me out. I have three sisters: the oldest is still in South Africa, and my two younger sisters are here. My sisters are very good. My parents were great to me, too. "I used to go to a special school where they did welding and panel beating and also woodwork. I left in 1970, on the 1st of June. I used to work in a pharmacy in South Africa, selling creams and all that, and then I was a cashier in a supermarket. They had proper registers, not like nowadays where it’s all through the computers. "After I came to Australia, I did intersection collections for charity – it was hard. And then I found out about The Big Issue, and I decided it was the best job for me. I like it very much. After a bit of a break, I’ve been back at The Big Issue for three years in February. The Big Issue is my favourite job. I like to sell the magazines and all that. I’ve got some customers that come from all over the place, and they buy from me. I get good money and it helps me buy things that I really need. I’m saving up to buy a new pair of headphones for the TV, so I don’t play things too loud. And I want to go on a holiday to Adelaide at a later stage. I’ve been trying so hard to go there for a while." Michael sells The Big Issue on the cnr Exhibition & Bourke Sts, Melbourne.
