Some fabulous new active transport links are ready to explore in Lake Macquarie! Most exciting is the Fernleigh Awabakal Shared Track which opened in August. The 3.5km extension of the iconic Fernleigh Track has filled a gap in the Coastline R1 Regional Cycleway to create a 27km continuous active transport route from Murrays Beach to Adamstown in Newcastle. Known to locals as FAST, the new shared path includes a landmark viewing platform over Belmont Lagoon, 400m of wetland boardwalk, separate footpath loops for bird-watching and a spectacular new bridge over Cold Tea Creek. Read on to find out more: https://lnkd.in/gcurWHY2 Two other shared paths projects are now complete – one in Cardiff and another at Cameron Park. Both fill missing links in the local active transport network. “These are small but mighty projects that reap significant benefits for the local community, encouraging active transport and healthy lifestyles and reducing our reliance on cars,” said Councillor Kay Fraser. Plan an adventure on two wheels in Lake Macquarie! About us
Bicycle NSW is a member-based association with a substantial history of representing bicycle users in NSW. Our mission is: “Creating a better environment for all bicycle riders” Our goal is to achieve a better environment for current riders, and for those who may be encouraged to ride a bicycle in the future. Bicycle NSW seeks to stimulate the cultural and behavioural change necessary to mainstream bicycle use while also advocating for improvements to be made to the built environment that improve the viability of the bicycle as a serious transport option. We run programs and events, advocate for better conditions for bicycle users and provide a variety of information for bicycle users. We work collaboratively with a wide network of partners and friends to reach our shared objective of mainstreaming bicycle use. ****You can now buy Bicycle NSW a coffee for articles and posts you enjoy and would like to support here: 👉 https://buymeacoffee.com/bicyclensw *****

Bicycle NSW and Bicycle User Groups Bike North Inc. and Camwest Bicycle User Group Inc have been working closely with the M7 project teams to ensure that the needs of bike riders using the M7 shared path are considered at all stages of the project to widen the motorway and build M12 interchange. The main shared user path (SUP) has not been impacted too much so far. However, from October 14th to early there will be a short diversion near Cecil Hills to allow the construction of Bridge15. Please ride carefully and follow the signs. We need you help to make sure the contractors are providing the best possible detours. Please alert Bicycle NSW if there are any safety or comfort issues with the temporary paths and signage. We will follow up with the project team. What a brilliant bike! Thanks so much to omafiets for lending Bicycle NSW a Brompton for the trip to Melbourne. The Brompton is THE classic folding bike. It is still made in the UK to the design developed in 1975 by Andrew Ritchie in London. The ingenious 3-part fold transforms a light and capable 6-speed bike into a small locked package in under 20 seconds. It’s a ‘magic carpet for the city’ that makes multi-modal travel a breeze. And you can pop it onto NSW TrainLink services without having to put in in a box! More on the Brompton story here: https://lnkd.in/g6WKW5Px Omafiets is a specialist retailer of a huge range of top bikes – cargo bikes, custom-made touring bikes, gravel bikes, all types of e-bikes. And the full range of Bromptons. Considered by many to be Sydney’s best bike shop, Omafiets also runs a professional bicycle workshop. Great tips for bicycle advocates everywhere! Bicycle NSW is a big fan of the work of Dave Walker Cartoons Dave is known as the ‘cycling cartoonist’. His sharp commentary on sustainable transport and bike riding has helped get people thinking about our inequitable transport system - and made many advocates smile! https://lnkd.in/gvdr3vrp Dave’s fantastic new 8-page comic can be downloaded here: https://lnkd.in/gcg2HhpK There are instructions for printing and folding. Why not make a few booklets to share with your community? There are dozens of poignant and clever cartoon in the book ‘From A to B’, a collection of recent work that Dave describes as ‘a manifesto for pedal-powered transport’ https://lnkd.in/gjif79dY All images: Dave Walker Cartoons Bicycle NSW Dave Walker #bugs #advocacy #insurance #membership #MemberBenefits #BikeIsBest

The lunchtime walking tour is a fixture at Transport Camp. In Melbourne, this involved a walk around the block to look at how Swanston Street, Little Collins Street, Exhibition Street and Collins Street have changed in recent years. Led by Richard Smithers, the recently-retired Manager Transport Strategy at City of Melbourne, we learnt about: ▪️ the quicker-cheaper-faster tactical interventions that Melbourne has deployed to great effect ▪️ the long-term transformation of Swanston Street ▪️ how an incredibly narrow bike lane on Collins Street actually works OK ▪️ the exciting new Metro that is under construction After attending Transport Camp, Bicycle NSW spent a weekend riding on Melbourne's bike infrastructure. It was fascinating to experience the different approaches to developing a bike network. A longer write-up is coming – watch this space! Bicycle NSW has attended another fantastic Transport Camp – this time in Melbourne! Transport Camp is an ‘un-conference’. There are no formal presentations or abstracts. Attendees set the agenda and run the sessions themselves. This might be to workshop an idea, present some recent research or discuss how stakeholders can work together to overcome policy blockages. It was a great opportunity to meet some of Melbourne’s community of advocates and professionals, all passionate about creating better cities and more diverse and sustainable transport. Highlights were sessions on reframing active transport strategies, boosting mode shift, passing the ‘pub test’, unbundled parking research and moving NIMBYs to MIMBYs to YIMBYs. And much, much more. And then we continued the conversations in a bar by the Yarra. Before a weekend exploring a LOT of Melbourne’s bike infrastructure on a brilliant Brompton on loan from Omafiets! Insights to come….
