    How important are secondments when securing in-house roles? 🏡 Specialist In-House legal recruitment consultant, Toby Orr, has put together the reasons he believes secondments are so valuable. “Client secondments seem like a win-win for everyone involved. The lawyer (usually a junior/mid-level) associate gains insight into a client’s operations, industry nuances, and key commercial drivers. The Partner, whilst they may lose a useful set of hands for some time, further cements their relationship with the client by helping them out during particularly busy periods (as long as the Associate does a decent job 🤞). I’m working with one junior lawyer who has two years’ worth of experience and is essentially acting as the sole legal counsel for ANZ for a major international FMCG. They’re working closely with other lawyers in the US and Europe and liaising directly with Senior Execs in Aus. 👀 This kind of exposure and hands-on contact is rare for junior lawyers in-house. Highlighting experiences like this, or any virtual secondments that you might have been on, can go a long way to help secure your first in-house role. We recently heard from a GC at a major international FMCG company who told us that our candidate’s two virtual secondments they’d done five or so years were a major factor in them getting the role in a tough decision between them and another candidate. Charlotte has put together her top 5 tips to ensure you’re making the right choices when it comes to the next stage in your career... “It can be a hard decision navigating one offer, let alone competing offers and counteroffers from your current employer. I coach lawyers through these decisions every day, and there is a lot to weigh up. At the end of the day, the decision must be an educated one. Look at your career from a bird's eye view - does this opportunity take you closer to where you want to be? Equally, does this role alleviate all (or at least some) of the pain points you are experiencing in your current role? Here are 5 critical considerations to take into account when making these decisions: 1️⃣ THE TOTAL PACKAGE  Assess more than just the salary. Scrutinise the entire compensation package, considering bonuses, benefits, and perks. Additionally, understand how pay increases are managed and what targets you need to meet to achieve an increase year on year.
