About us

BAI Communications is bringing fresh, independent thinking to the connectivity landscape for broadcasters, governments, mobile network operators, private enterprises, transport, and venues. Operating one of the most extensive broadcast networks in the world, we deliver fully managed television and radio services covering 99% of the Australian population. In times of crisis, such as natural disasters, national broadcasters rely on BAI to maintain their communications with Australians, and emergency services trust us to keep them connected and informed. With the acceleration of 5G technology, BAI leverages its global experience to enable ubiquitous coverage in buildings, tunnels, stadiums and other congested hard to cover areas, as well as contributing to the creation of smart precincts. Having grown from its origins in Australia, BAI Communications now operates as a separate organisation in the Northern Hemisphere, Boldyn Networks. With full support of our common majority shareholder, CPP Investments, and minority shareholder, AIMCo (Alberta Investment Management Corporation), we remain closely aligned, and will leverage the shared history and experience of Boldyn as we look to create a digital future for Australia.

Our team at BAI Communications recently attended MEGATRANS 2024, where Nick Gurney and John Radge engaged with industry leaders on the future of logistics. Key conversations highlighted the critical role of automation and digital transformation in driving the sector forward and shaping a more efficient and resilient supply chain. This is especially exciting for us, as we see clear opportunities to add real value by enabling these advancements through private mobile networks (PMNs). PMNs offer the secure, dedicated connectivity necessary to unlock the potential of emerging technologies such as automation, IoT, and AI. This enables operators to streamline operations, enhance real-time data flow, and drive efficiency and innovation across the supply chain. Additionally, PMNs provide scalability and flexibility, allowing businesses to respond to dynamic demands and improve operational agility. As the industry embraces these future trends, we see PMNs as key enablers for optimised performance, improved safety, and a more resilient supply chain ecosystem. “Logistics is evolving rapidly, shifting towards automation and smart technologies requiring a network to keep pace with demand. Private mobile networks provide the essential connectivity to operate efficiently and integrate emerging technologies like automation and IoT. This helps operators stay competitive in a fast-changing market. This is the future of logistics, and we’re excited to be part of it.” Nick Gurney, Telecommunications Director at BAI. Our team recently commissioned the cutover of the first fully managed digital television (DTV) service for the Seven Network. Despite challenging conditions, including a renovation in progress and limited access, our team successfully commissioned the cutover to DTV at Black Mountain Tower in Canberra, meeting our installation deadline ahead of schedule. This achievement is a testament to our commitment to delivering high-quality services and supporting our partners in the broadcasting industry. Recently, a group of BAI employees had the privilege of volunteering with the Cerebral Palsy Alliance (CPA) at their supported employment hub, Packforce. This incredible facility provides meaningful employment opportunities for individuals living with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. At BAI, our commitment to giving back is reflected in our paid charity/volunteer leave, enabling our team members to actively support the communities we serve. The day began with a tour of CPA’s impressive Allambie Heights facilities, which serve thousands of clients. Our engineers were particularly inspired by the innovative wheelchair customisation processes. The visit highlighted the significant advancements in assisted living technologies that promote accessibility and social inclusion — from ramps to sliding doors, all crucial in improving quality of life. The BAI team are also participating in CPA’s flagship fundraising initiative, STEPtember, which plays a vital role in supporting their transformative programs. We encourage everyone to get involved and keep stepping this month! Following the tour, the BAI volunteers joined the Packforce team, a vibrant group of approximately 100 employees, with around 60 rostered on any given day. As they moved between workstations, they had the chance to meet many remarkable individuals who graciously shared their stories. The tasks for the day included packing pencils and preparing pathology kits, serving a variety of clients across industries. For some Packforce employees, this experience serves as a stepping stone towards open employment, reinforcing the profound impact of inclusion and the pride that comes with contributing to such meaningful work. It was a deeply rewarding day for all involved, and we wholeheartedly encourage our team to continue seeking out opportunities to make a difference through volunteering. At Radiodays Asia 2024, a workshop led by Steve Ahern explored sustainable broadcasting practices, focusing on the United Nations (UN) Sustainability Goals. With the outcomes shared in Radioinfo, a key highlight was the emphasis on power consumption and emissions reduction at broadcast transmission sites, with BAI serving as a notable example. We have implemented modulation dependent carrier level control (MDCL) at one of our Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Radio Sydney’s transmission sites, resulting in a significant 17% reduction in emissions. MDCL is an energy-saving technique used in radio broadcasting. It dynamically adjusts the power output of the transmitter based on the level of modulation. When the audio signal is low or silent, the transmitter reduces its power output, conserving energy. Conversely, when the signal peaks, the transmitter increases its power to ensure optimal audio quality. This smart modulation technique allows us to reduce energy consumption without compromising signal quality for our broadcast customers. By employing MDCL on our 50kW transmitters, BAI achieved annual savings of 234 MWh in energy and 310 tonnes of CO2e emissions, the equivalent of over 1.7 million kilometres of vehicle travel or planting over 5,000 tree seedlings. BAI is setting an example by showing that sustainable practices can deliver both environmental benefits and operational cost savings, aligning with broader industry goals for a greener future. Yesterday, BAI proudly supported R U OK? Day, a day dedicated to encouraging everyone to check in with the people around them, not just once a year, but every day. In line with this year's message, we are encouraging regular and meaningful conversations. Whether it's a colleague, family member, or friend, being there to listen can make all the difference to someone who is going through a challenging time. The message is clear: Ask R U OK? any day, not just today. As part of our support, we have been hosting morning tea at offices around the country this week, where teams came together to connect, reflect, and continue building an open and supportive environment. We also dedicated an hour for our teams to ‘power down.’ This initiative encourages our team to take a break from their screens, step away from the fast-paced workday, and do something that recharges their energy. Whether it's taking a walk, connecting with someone important, or simply taking a moment for themselves, we believe in the value of making time for mental wellness. These small, intentional actions help us all contribute to a supportive community where no one must face struggles and challenges alone. Let's take the time to ask, "Are you OK?" today, and every day. #RUOKDay #MentalHealthAwareness #SupportiveWorkplace #CommunityCare #PowerDown #BAICommunications #OneBAITeam
