Australian Workers are Stronger Together

About us

The history of Australia cannot be written without reference to the Australian Workers’ Union. Since our formation in 1886, we have stood up and delivered for working families. We began representing shearers and miners. Today our members work in manufacturing, steel, aluminium, glass, oil & gas, aviation, agriculture, construction, state public services, local government, health, plastics, hospitality, food, paper, resources, aquaculture, the beauty industry, events, and racing industries. Our members are as diverse as the industries they work in, but we are unified by the belief that when we stand together we are stronger together.

  • Today is the first day Same Job Same Pay Orders can take effect - and thousands of labour hire workers across Australia are set to get pay rises of up to 60%. 💵 While the new laws mean that the Fair Work Commission can publish an order to force employers to pay labour hire workers the same rate of pay as their direct employees, these wage increases don't just happen. Unions across Australia are lodging applications to the Fair Work Commission and fighting employer opposition to convince the Commission to issue the Same Job, Same Pay order to the employer. That is why it's important to join your union and stand together - we're fighting for better deal for all workers. You deserve to be paid fairly!

  • Yesterday, Qantas workers and the unions representing them under the Qantas Engineers’ Alliance made of the AMWU, AWU and ETU rallied outside the Qantas AGM to let shareholders know how Qantas continues to implement wage freezes on the workers that uphold the airline’s safety reputation as one of the best in the world. No more delays. It’s time for fair pay!

  • Every worker who comes to Australia deserves to be paid and treated fairly - and that includes fair access to superannuation. But right now, PALM workers are let down by the current superannuation process. That's why the AWU is calling for change, and demanding the Commonwealth: ✅ Streamline the super claims process for PALM workers ✅ Remove the 35%+ tax on Departing Australia Superannuation Payments (DASP) for PALM Workers ✅ Allow more options for PALM workers to transfer superannuation to their home countries ✅ Establish trusted super funds such as AustralianSuper and Prime Super as default options for PALM workers. It's time Australia repaid their hard work! Sign the petition and join the campaign here: https://lnkd.in/g8D3mRXN

  • Qantas engineers are highly skilled professionals, and we make sure your plane is safe to fly. During the pandemic, workers made sacrifices so Qantas would survive — copping wage freezes and going months without secure work — as Qantas rorted over $2 billion from the public purse, millions were given to CEO salaries, and hard-working customers were price gouged. Qantas now wants the public to believe they have changed. Qantas Engineers’ Alliance members can tell you — nothing has changed at Qantas. Workers feel undervalued, underpaid, and disrespected. We’re fighting to have our skills recognised and valued. However, Qantas is refusing to come to the bargaining table, forcing our members to take action to make ourselves heard. We’re asking you to support our fight so we can get back to work and keep you flying safely. Tell Qantas to stop the delays and deliver fair pay: https://loom.ly/WrrcWMM

  • Qantas engineers at Melbourne and Brisbane have downed tools for 24 hours in the fight for a fair pay increase! As our National Secretary, Paul, and National President, Marina, explain, after 3.5 years of wage freezes, our members are fed up and fighting back. Tomorrow, Qantas Engineers' Alliance members will be at the Qantas AGM in Hobart telling CEO Vanessa Hudson - no more delays, it's time for fair pay!

  • All workers who come to Australia deserve the same dignity in retirement as Australians. But PALM workers on our farms, in our abattoirs and in our aged care facilities are routinely let down by the settings of Superannuation for migrant workers. These workers already face horrific levels of exploitation and abuse - and it has to stop. That's why the AWU is calling on the Commonwealth to: ✅ Streamline the super claims process for PALM workers ✅ Remove the 35%+ tax on Departing Australia Superannuation Payments (DASP) ✅ Allow more options for PALM workers to transfer superannuation to their home countries ✅ Establish trusted super funds such as AustralianSuper and Prime Super as default options for PALM workers. • Hundreds of Qantas maintenance engineers are fed up! Today they took industrial action by downing tools for 24 hours at two of the biggest airports in Australia. Their voices deserve to be heard as the airline continues to ignore the elected bargaining committee. The Qantas Engineers’ Alliance made of the AMWU, AWU and ETU, are fighting for recognition of their skills. These highly skilled workers make sure the planes are safe to fly! No more delays! It’s time for fair pay.

  • All workers deserve to feel safe on site, and be able to come home each day. The AWU's recent win means workers exposed to silica dust are now guaranteed increased WHS protections against deadly silica dust. However, there's still a long way to go to in terms of understanding the level of exposure to silica dust that tunnelling workers have been exposed to. Researchers at the University of Sydney are conducting a survey on exposure to silica dust in Australian tunnelling. Your contribution to this survey will assist with wider research about the dangers of dust exposure in tunnelling projects. Your input will help save lives. Take the survey today and strengthen the fight for worker safety: https://lnkd.in/gMGf5A5D

  • The AWU is proud to support a successful Same Job, Same Pay application that will see labour hire workers' pay increase by 60%! Labour hire employees at the South32 Cannington Mine will now be paid the same rates set out in the Enterprise Agreement negotiated by the AWU - meaning wages will increase from a flat $45 per hour to $72! The Same Job, Same Pay application was lodged earlier this year, with labour hire company TP Human Capital not opposing the case. For years, large corporations have been using labour hire to bypass the wages and conditions negotiated by workers and their unions, cutting pay to boost their profits. It's unacceptable and the union movement is taking a stand. It's simple - if you perform the same job, with the same skills and experience as a direct employee, you deserve the same wages. We will never give up the fight for your rights at work!
