  • Hello AVI supporters! My name is Meg Barnes and I am AVI’s Gift in Wills Officer. For the past 18 months, my young family and I embarked upon the road trip of a lifetime, seeing and experiencing some of the most breath-taking corners of this beautiful country. During our travels across various states, I had the pleasure of stopping to meet and spend time with some of AVI’s most valued supporters.     As part of Include a Charity week, I'll be introducing you to three of these remarkable individuals who have generously committed to leaving a gift in their will to AVI. Today, we meet John Ingram who first came to know AVI as a volunteer in West Malaysia in 1966-67 and then again in 1968 when he completed an assignment in PNG. John reflects on the impact his involvement with AVI has had on his life and why he has chosen to leave a legacy that lives on in the lives of others.    #BeTheSpark #IncludeACharity #Bequest #GiftinWill    Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/giK9dkzw Photo: Left to right - Paia Ingram, Meg Barnes, John Ingram

  • Today marks the beginning of Include and Charity Week, a time to remind Australians of the opportunity to pledge gifts to their favourite causes.     To celebrate, AVI’s Gift in Wills officer, Meg Barnes will be taking over our social media - sharing stories featuring some of our most valued supporters who have generously committed to leaving a gift in their will to AVI.    At AVI, we believe your will is an expression of your values – the things you care about the most in this world. Most importantly, it is a chance to leave a legacy that lives on in the lives of others.    Deciding to leave a gift in your will to AVI is so much more than adding words to a legal document. It is a gesture that says you believe in a more peaceful, just and sustainable world for future generations.    Learn more about AVI’s Gift in Wills program on our website at https://lnkd.in/g6DKcd2w    #BeTheSpark #IncludeACharity #Bequest #GiftinWill

Threats to our world are intensifying – dangerous weather, increased wars and soaring inequality. Only 18% of the global humanitarian funding needed has been received, whilst 300 million people are expected to require humanitarian assistance this year alone. On World Humanitarian Day, AVI's CEO Melanie Gow and Board Chair Julie Hamblin FAICD added their voices to a growing number of sector leaders calling on our nation’s decision-makers to help build a #SaferWorldForAll By joining this campaign, we call on the Australian Government to uphold its obligations under the Geneva Conventions and ensure accountability where these are breached by others. In doing so, we are calling on the government to put humanity and its commitment to international humanitarian law first. From Gaza, Sudan, Ukraine plus in many more contexts, attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure must stop. If we do nothing, today’s challenges will become tomorrow’s catastrophes. But, decisions made by this generation can put the world back on track. It is time to #ActForHumanity Read the campaign World Humanitarian Day statement in full here: https://lnkd.in/geUWkb8D #WorldHumanitarianDay

  • Thanks to the generous support of the UK Government, the Blue Pacific Pro Bono Collaborative was able to mobilise ten Australian lawyers from four leading law firms to Fiji for secondments varying from two months to two weeks. Through the Collaborative, Australian lawyers work alongside Fijian lawyers appointed by the Fiji Law Society to provide pro bono legal support to the Pacific Community (SPC), the Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS) and the Fiji Law Society. During that time, the lawyers work on projects that address issues such as gender-based violence, access to justice and community resilience, therefore contributing to stability and security in the region.    The Fiji Law Society also hosted its inaugural Pro Bono Roundtable, which has sparked important conversations around the development of a more formalised pro bono system that would enable legal practitioners to help address the significant unmet legal needs in the country. Although many Fijian lawyers already do pro bono work, they do so on an ad hoc basis and at their own expense. A collective system would provide lawyers in Fiji with the support they need to take on more pro bono work. Fiji Law Society Pacific Community-SPC 📸 By Reef Studios Fiji 1. • After close to a decade, AVI’s involvement with the Solomon Islands Medical Partnership for Learning, Education and Research (SIMPLER) has come to an end. Whilst we are sad to step away from this incredible work, we celebrate that this provides an opportunity for the program's full localisation. From here on, the Solomon Islands Ministry Of Health & Medical Services and the National Referral Hospital will assume ownership of all SIMPLER projects. AVI is incredibly proud of the achievements of the program. Since 2015, we have worked in partnership with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the National Referral Hospital (NRH) and the Solomon Islands Ministry of Health and Medical Services to place Australian volunteer health professionals in the NRH in Honiara to support local health professionals. AVI would like to express our gratitude to the Australian Government for its generous support and belief in SIMPLER over the past 10 years. We would also like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the staff and leadership team at the NRH for their unwavering dedication, expertise and generosity in making SIMPLER a resounding success. And finally, we would like to acknowledge all the Australian and Solomon Islander health professionals who have played a part in the evolution of SIMPLER over the years - your work will continue to make a difference for decades to come. #healthcare #solomonislands #Honiara

  • As we draw towards the end of National Reconciliation Week, AVI is proud to announce the endorsement of our second Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan by Reconciliation Australia. Echoing the sentiments of Wurundjeri Elder Uncle Ringo Terrick who joined us for the launch event, this Reconciliation Action Plan is not just a document that sits on a shelf, it is a formal and public document that holds us accountable to our commitment to work towards reconciliation and truth-telling. We believe we can create meaningful change by fundamentally transforming our practices to ensure Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people are not only welcome and respected but also fully empowered to enjoy the same opportunities, justice, and rights as non-Indigenous Australians.
