Great news for Aussie exporters to the UAE: Today, the Australian Government signed a free trade agreement (FTA) with the United Arab Emirates, known as the Australia – UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. The agreement will greatly benefit Australian farmers and agricultural producers, who will have better access to the UAE’s growing market for premium food and agricultural products. Tariff savings alone are estimated to be worth over $50 million annually to Australian agriculture and food exporters. The agreement removes tariffs on over 99% of Australia’s exports, including: - meat - dairy - grains and oilseeds - pulses - horticulture - honey. It also includes reduced tariffs on wine. This is Australia’s first FTA to include a chapter on sustainable agriculture and food systems. This will help to support sustainable agriculture policies and practices in Australia and overseas. We’re committed to helping support food security and sustainable agriculture globally. That’s why we've made a voluntary contribution of AU$3.4 million to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) who lead global efforts to defeat hunger and achieve food security for all people. This contribution will help Pacific countries engage with the FAO to boost livelihoods and economic opportunities for our Pacific family, further support the FAO’s sustainable livestock initiatives, and support the FAO to further develop its standard setting activities. We’re proud to support the FAO’s efforts in the Pacific, as well as its work on sustainable agriculture and standards. This work benefits agriculture in Australia, the Pacific and beyond. Important information about H5 bird flu. Although Australia remains the only continent free from the serious and highly contagious H5N1 strain of bird flu, it's important to stay informed and prepared. Here’s what you should know: 1. What is H5 bird flu? Bird flu is a viral disease that primarily affects birds but can sometimes infect other animals. The likelihood of humans becoming infected is very low. 2. How has it spread to other countries? H5 bird flu has spread quickly across the world through the movement of wild birds. Early detection will reduce the risk of the disease spreading. 3. How is Australia preparing for H5 bird flu? The Australian Government is investing more than $100 million to ensure Australia is prepared for H5 bird flu. Industry, government and other organisations are working together to enhance preparedness and national response capabilities. 4. How can you help? We can all help protect our wild birds and poultry against bird flu. Simple steps you can take to help: - Don’t let wild birds mingle with your birds. Use netting or housing. - Don’t let wild birds access feed and water containers. - Keep aviaries and equipment clean. If you find multiple dead birds or other animals, do not touch them. Instead, take photos or a video, record your location and report it to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888. We’re delighted to host Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations FAO Director-General, Dr Qu Dongyu and Deputy Director-General, Ms Beth Bechdol in Australia. The FAO leads international efforts to defeat hunger and aims to achieve food security for all people. With around two-thirds of Australia’s agricultural products being exported, we play a significant role in combatting world hunger. We’re hosting Dr Qu’s visit to Australia so we can showcase some of Australia’s incredible agriculture. First up on the agenda was meeting some of our frontline biosecurity officers, including Gordi, one of our hardworking detector dogs. After visiting Australia, Dr Qu will then travel to the FAO Pacific Small Island Developing States meeting in Fiji. #FAOvisit2024
