Nearly 80 years after Pilot Officer Justin Mulligan and Warrant Officer William Kinloch lost their lives during a mission over Germany, relatives have accepted Commendations for Gallantry for their service. 🎖️ The RAAF aviators flew Mosquito fighter bombers on 60 missions over Europe with No. 464 Squadron, which included the daring daylight raid on 31 October 1944 that destroyed the Gestapo Headquarters at Aarhus in Denmark - a 1900km roundtrip flown almost entirely at low level. Tragically, the pair would not survive the war, killed during the early hours of 13 January 1945 when their Mosquito crashed near the German border with Belgium. They were just 22 years old. Anne Burton is the niece of WOFF Kinloch, and accepted his award on May 21, 2024. Justin Newberry is the nephew of PLTOFF Mulligan, and accepted his uncle’s award on September 24, 2024. Air Force provides air and space power for Australia's security. #AusAirForce
About us
The Royal Australian Air Force is a world-class military force operating some of the most advanced aircraft and defence technology in use anywhere today. We may be the second oldest Air Force in the world, but we sure look young for our age! Since our formation in 1921 we have set a proud record protecting Australia alongside the Royal Australian Navy and Australian Army. This tradition continues today. Each day, our personnel deliver Australian air power, whenever and wherever, it is needed. Built on the proud history and traditions of the Australian Flying Corps and the Royal Australian Air Force, we will fight and win by generating integrated kinetic and non-kinetic air and space effects across the sea, land, air, space and cyber operating domains. Air Force provides immediate and responsive military options across the spectrum of operations as part of a Whole of Government joint or coalition response. We exploit the air power characteristics of persistent and precision effect, flexibility, perspective, reach, penetration, versatility and responsiveness. We are leaders in command and control of air and space operations; intelligence, surveillance and response; and targeting. We are the leaders for strategic, operational, tactical, technical and logistic management of Australia's military aviation capability. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us at the RAAF Base East Sale Open Day! 🌟 We hope you had as much fun at the Open Day on 20 October as we did. Aerial displays by the Pilatus PC-21 and the Air Force Roulettes wowed the crowd. Ground displays and flight simulators offered an up-close insight into life in the ADF and our career opportunities. It was a pleasure meeting so many Gippsland locals and showcasing our aircraft and capability. We hope to see you again soon! #AusAirForce #Community

Our Edgy Air Force Lab had the privilege of hosting Deputy Commander of the Royal Canadian Air Force | Aviation royale canadienne, Major General Jamie Speiser-Blanchet and the Director-General Air and Space Force Development, Brigadier General Brendan Cook in Canberra last week. The visit provided a hands-on insight into the Edgy Program, which nurtures bottom-up problem-solving to support mission success. Through the Edgy Air Force Program, #AusAirForce is empowering aviators at the grassroots, facilitating and advocating for evolutionary innovation and improvement to deliver Air Command’s next generational edge.

Safety is everyone's business!👍🦺 October might be National Safe Work Month, but ensuring the safety of flying operations is the primary focus of many #AusAirForce personnel on a daily basis. RAAF Base Amberley is the busiest air base in the country, being home to a number of aircraft types from heavy cargo to fast jets, as well as hosting a wide range of visiting aircraft from partners and allies, including most recently the US Air Force B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber. With such a range of aircraft, no day is the same, providing base operations staff many opportunities to demonstrate their proactive approach to safety. For RAAF Base Amberley aviation safety officer Flight Lieutenant Peter Simms, the best way to ensure both base units and external services can deal with emergencies is through the conduct of crash exercises.
