Ep.2 Mike the CEO and AI So how did it go and what did I learn: 1) My Elvis costume and fake American accent were more effective than I expected so the audience only worked out it was me about midway through. That was a surprise. 2) The speech went down a treat and received laughs and applause in all the right places. Thanks, ChatGPT 3) Singing rather than speaking some of the Elvis lyrics in the speech caught everyone, including me ☺️ by surprise but I and the audience seemed to emerge unscathed from the experience. 4) With ChatGPT, like with everything in business, it’s all about the questions you pose and the phrasing of the request. Get the question correct and the answer becomes easy. 5) (Wo)man + machine is an incredible combination. I believe my final speech was better than I would have produced without ChatGPT or, at the very least, I produced it far more quickly than if I had written it without ChatGPT assistance. 6) Next time I’ll change out of my costume before joining the after-party. Elvis in central Adelaide at 3amis not for the faint-hearted! In summary, my first interaction with ChatGPT was enough for me to be convinced about how I can use it in my everyday job but also to appreciate that it is, like many of the tools we utilise in business life, another tool to master. A tool that requires me to build new skills so that I can properly leverage it. If you haven’t yet tried it then please do so, but remember that Mastery doesn’t happen in a day. Be patient and spend time thinking of the specific question you’re trying to answer. The richer your request, the more valuable the response. I’ll cover my next AI challenge in Ep.2 to follow soon…

Check out Episode 1 of Mike Emmett's series on his experience with AI.
Ep.1 Mike the CEO and AI My first memorable personal use of AI was when I needed to draft the welcome speech at the gala dinner of the 2023 @Austbrokers conference held in Adelaide in April. The theme was ‘1950s/60s Rock ‘n’ Roll’ so of course I decided to dress as Elvis and therefore needed a suitable speech littered with Elvis’s song lyrics. Enter ChatGPT. While I’d fiddled with the technology before this was the first real outcome I would test. So how did I go? Firstly, the phrasing of your request is important. My first request was: ‘Create a welcome speech using the lyrics from Elvis Presley songs’ And of course, this is precisely what it did. An entire speech, albeit short, made up of the lyrics from Elvis songs. Unfortunately, while funny, this wasn’t usable as it had no real meaning or message. Enter the next useful element about ChatGPT. You can regenerate a new answer to your request. And so I did - twenty times. While some were better than others, none of these were usable. Next tactic. What blew my mind is that I then tried an incredibly long and detailed request - and it worked! This was my updated request: ‘Write a welcome speech for a 1950’s themed dinner for a professional audience and include a sprinkling of lyrics from Elvis songs. The style should include humour but also have themes of motivation and congratulations’ This is the first generated response I received, unedited by me: “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to our fabulous 1950s themed dinner soirée, where we are all shook up and ready to rock 'n' roll! 🎶 As we gather here in our poodle skirts and slick pompadours, let's remember that "A little less conversation, a little more action" can lead us to great success in our professional endeavors. 🕺 Just like Elvis said, "It's now or never, come hold me tight. Kiss me my darling, be mine tonight." Tonight, let's embrace the spirit of the 1950s nostalgia and channel that energy into our work, inspiring each other to achieve new heights of excellence. In the wise words of the King himself, "When things go wrong, don't go with them." Let's take on challenges with the spirit of resilience and determination that defined a generation. So, here's to all of you amazing professionals who have worked hard and deserve a night of celebration. Congratulations on all your achievements! Let's have a fantastic evening filled with laughter, inspiration, and maybe a little bit of rock 'n' roll. Thank you for being here! 🎉” Did I use this - no. But I did regenerate a response about 10 times and found that most of the regenerated responses had elements that were worth using. So I cut and pasted the best components of each into the final speech and updated with some personal style and humour – and then let my wife critique and enhance it! I’ll post Ep2. tomorrow with my observations about how things went.

Mike Emmett, CEO & MD of AUB Group, is currently examining the role and relevance of AI in the business landscape. For a thoughtful analysis of how AI is influencing business strategies, follow the link to Mike’s latest posts. #ArtificialIntelligence #BusinessStrategy #Innovation
It seems that everywhere you look these days there is reference to AI. It’s a topic that has piqued my interest for many years and so when it became more ‘embraceable’ for your average executive like me, I decided to adopt it whenever feasible. I started my practical journey with AI in early 2023 initially using Chat GPT and then broadening this as AI tools became more accessible such as those embedded in tools from Microsoft and Adobe and then very recently using Meta.AI. Having read tons of literature, press releases and executive comments about AI adoption I’ve noticed that much of this is littered with technical jargon and hubris. It’s actually very difficult to understand how your average executive in a ‘regular’ business can utilise AI. Given this, while my AI journey to this point has been haphazard, I thought it would be of use to one or two people to hear about how I’ve utilised AI in my day-to-day role as a company CEO. Over the next few weeks I’ll post my experiences from the past 16 months including my hits and misses using AI. Hopefully this will be of interest.
