Connecting Communities Our team visited the Disability Expo in Liverpool last month to share our services with the local community. During the expo we also spoke with various NDIS providers to look at how we could work together to support more people into meaningful employment. The team looks forward to supporting more people into sustainable work in the Liverpool area, and maybe even into their first ever job, just as we did for Brittany. When Brittany first started with us, she had never held employment previously. She didn’t feel confident applying for roles and was unsure what type of roles she could do with her health. With the support of atWork Australia she landed her first ever job and now has the confidence to pursue further opportunities. People living with a disability have a fear of discrimination when it comes to sharing information of their disability with a potential employer. Most likely because they have unfortunately experienced discrimination in the past. As a Nation there are signs of positive changes in the diversity and inclusion space, however, statistics indicate that what is being done, is not enough. The latest statistics released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare indicated that 46% of the complaints received by the Human Rights Commission in 2022-23 were about disability discrimination. A more staggering statistic highlighting the need for drastic change for the way disability is viewed in our workplaces and communities can be seen through the fact that in 2018, 44% of respondents who live with disability said that they avoided situations because of their disability. As employers we can create safe spaces to share information. Learn more about how here: https://ow.ly/IVRU50TBS60

A berry good deal! atWork Australia clients in Hurstville, NSW recently participated in work experience as a retail assistant as part of a training course run by GenU. The hands-on experience gave clients an insight into the industry. During the day, clients had real time experience in using EFTPOS machine and hands-on experience in selling jam to customers at the pop-up shop set up at Westfield, Hurstville. They were so good that they almost sold out and now feel confident and highly motivated to find similar work. The atWork Australia team is now working with these clients to find opportunities in the industry. More Australians are requiring digital skills, such as the ability to quickly learn how to use office software, in order to enter the workforce and find fulfilling, sustainable employment. A 2021 report by RMIT University found that 87% of jobs in Australia require digital literacy skills, while four in five businesses think it’s a priority to adopt new technologies to achieve business goals, a need which will only increase. However, 1 in 4 Australians reported feeling they didn’t have the skills required for the jobs of tomorrow. “Digital literacy skills are essential in the modern workforce, across a wide variety of roles – whether you’re working in administration in an office, or operating equipment in a warehouse,” said Shaun Pianta from atWork Australia. “We help Australians increase their digital literacy by providing training and short courses for those seeking employment. We also encourage those looking for work to practice using technology at home – for example, by catching up with a friend on a Zoom call, rather than the phone – to increase their understanding.” Hear from our client, 62-year-old Glen here: https://ow.ly/jLcq50TBRU0
