MAKING WAVES AT FLINDERS UNI ASC Naval Architect, Chris, presented alongside the Australian Maritime College (AMC) to aspiring students investigating a career in maritime engineering at the Flinders University’s Open Day. “It was great to see so many of the students were already well-informed about Australia’s future submarines and ships,” says Chris, who attended with Jack, an Undergraduate Engineer at ASC. "You could see their passion to get involved with future projects coming to Australia’s defence sector.” ASC works in stride with AMC to promote courses which support the expertise needed for such a complex industry. LOOKING BACK: THE LAUNCH OF HMAS COLLINS On this day 31 years ago, Australia’s first sovereign-built submarine, HMAS Collins, was launched in Adelaide. Rolled out of the shed and lowered into the ocean, the boat became the first of its class to hit the water. A truly pivotal point for a new era of defence manufacturing in Australia. Launched by Lady Phyllis Collins, the widow of the boat’s namesake, Vice Admiral Sir John Collins. She broke the traditional bottle of champagne across the conning tower of HMAS Collins during the official ceremony on August 28, 1993. #onthisday #defence #submarines

FROM TOP GUN TO SUBMARINES ASC Engineer, Cameron, shared at Defence Nexus that his inspiration for wanting to work in the defence industry came from seeing jet fighters in ‘Top Gun’ as a child. Amongst industry leaders also on the panel, Cameron noted “the changing landscape in Australia’s defence industry is calling for inspired and skilled people to solve a diverse range of complex problems.” The Defence Nexus annual networking event brings together engineering graduates and industry leader to share insights about the opportunities and challenges for engineering on defence programs in Australia. Thanks to the Defence Engineering Graduates of South Australia for bringing together this event, we’re excited to see what the future engineers in the room will bring to the industry! #defence #graduates #DefenceCareers

LOOKING BACK: HMAS COLLINS ROLL OUT The ‘roll out’ of HMAS Collins was an incredible national program. On this day 31 years ago, ASC hosted an open day at its Osborne site for family members to see the submarines under construction. In 1993, Aslan was a second-year apprentice at ASC who took his family to see Australia’s first sovereign-built submarine. “Being involved in the fabrication of the initial sections and then seeing them transformed into an operational submarine was very rewarding,” says Aslan. Still employed at ASC today, Aslan has witnessed the build and the sustainment of every Collins Class submarine since. Let us know in the comments if you were lucky enough to be at the open day! #onthisday #Defence #submarines

ENGINEERING THE FUTURE Introducing Charlie, an ASC graduate engineer working in submarine capability and, the winner of ASC’s annual SA Graduate Engineer of the Year Award. We asked Charlie some questions about his role: What do you like most about engineering? “The aspect of problem solving and networking to seek more information. I’ve been able to build a broad professional circle because the graduate program at ASC rotates graduates through different areas of the business. It’s a natural way to make genuine connections and deepen my technical knowledge.” How did you find working with different teams throughout the program? “The teams are always collaborative and motivated to put their best work forward. “I’m proud knowing that each group I contributed to thought I performed well. The formal recognition of the award isn’t something I sought, but it cements a notion that you’re doing something right.” Congratulations Charlie!
