AMDA Board Member and Convener of this week's Indian Ocean Defence & Security (IODS), Chris Williams, helped welcomed official guests and dignitaries as part of the Welcome Reception with a thought-provoking presentation. Chris’s time as a Submarine Navigator, and executive roles leading and scaling Australian engineering and maintenance businesses gives him a unique insight into the AUKUS partnership and Australia's provision of nuclear-powered submarines. #IODS2024 #WhereAUKUSMeetstheQuad

I was grateful to deliver the opening reception address at the Indian Ocean Defence Security Conference (IODS 2024) held in Perth this week. The speech allowed me to highlight the unseen work AMDA is doing to support Australian Industry, in addition to facilitating the Avalon, Landforces and INDOPAC International Conferences. The speech also gave me an opportunity to talk about the importance of uplifting the whole of nation Australian Industry Capability to realise the SSN-AUKUS vision. #IODS #AMDA #AUKUS #QUAD #DefenceIndustry #AIC #Innovation #SovereignCapability The elephant in the room will probably weigh around 10,000 tonnes. This is of course the SSN-AUKUS submarine program. We all know the numbers, but as a nation we are still fleshing out the reality of how Australian industry capability may be lifted to a new level by building, operating and supporting the most complex moving platform ever built. And that’s not just on a technical level. The sheer scale, complexity and longevity of the SSN-AUKUS program will provide continuity that will enable smart Australian SMEs to invest, plan and manage risk with confidence. Many will evolve from providing components to providing systems, from being manufacturers to becoming integrators. It has the potential to create the sovereign mid-level and even prime contractor community Australian industry has traditionally lacked on any real scale. That is, as long as we do it well. And by that I mean ensuring Australian Industry Capability commitments are real, are supported, and most importantly, survive contract award. The AUKUS program must be a truly national effort. Although the hulls will come together in Adelaide, their systems and support will come from every corner of the nation. To maximise the benefits to Australia’s industry and economy, this project needs to be bigger than interstate rivalries or political point scoring. If that can be achieved, AUKUS can deliver both an effective platform for our Defence Force, and a true and measurable capability transformation for Australian industry. Conflict is ultimately decided by logistics and economics. On an international level, that means Australia must have the means to maintain both its rights and responsibilities in the region, and protect international trade and communication on the high seas. On an AUKUS program level, the lesson of Oberon and Collins is that building and sustaining our submarines in Australia, done well, offers real advantages in cost, flexibility, development and, most importantly, platform availability and effectiveness for the Royal Australian Navy. Ensuring Australian Industry Capability commitments create real opportunities for Australian companies will give us the greatest possible control over through-life support for the fleet, which we all know accounts for 60 to 70 per cent of total life cycle cost in peacetime, but becomes priceless in times of conflict.
