On Friday, August 23rd, Alzheimer's WA marked a significant milestone with the official opening of Don’s Cottage at Hawthorn House in Albany. The event drew a remarkable crowd of over 150 guests, celebrating this important occasion. The new cottage respite house was officially opened by Member of Parliament Rebecca Stephens MLA, Labor Member for Albany, on behalf of the Hon. Don Punch MLA, Minister for Seniors and Ageing. Also in attendance were valued clients, and volunteers, Ricky Burges, PSM, Chairperson of the Great Southern Development Commission, local councillors, and Alzheimer’s WA Board of Directors, led by Chair Prof. Warren Harding, AM and CEO, Ella Dachs. The recent #WorldBrainDay2024 highlighted the importance of preventing brain diseases by increasing awareness and sharing healthy behaviours. The World Health Organization has found strong interrelationships between several neurological disorders such as dementia and stroke with behavioural risk factors like physical inactivity, unbalanced diets, and harmful alcohol consumption.   Here are some tips to keep your brain healthy: Eat a Balanced Diet: Incorporate foods rich in antioxidants, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. Think berries, leafy greens, nuts, and fish. Stay Active: Regular physical activity boosts blood flow to the brain and helps maintain cognitive function. Mental Exercise: Keep your mind sharp with puzzles, reading, and learning new skills. Stay Connected: Social interaction can help ward off depression and stress, which can contribute to cognitive decline.   Locally, Maggie Beer’s Big Mission on ABC, aims to educate older Australians on the benefits of healthy eating and improve the quality of meals in aged care homes. A healthy lifestyle will be an important theme for this year’ Dementia Symposium: https://lnkd.in/guf52A-N   Let's commit to nourishing our brains and supporting people living with dementia. Together, let’s ensure no one faces dementia alone! To learn more about brain health and prevention, visit https://lnkd.in/gTRD6TSK or call 1300 66 77 88.
