Alternaleaf has wrapped its SXSW Sydney debut where General Manager of Technology and Product, Myles Lawlor, participated in the Women Love Tech panel. With only 15% of women in STEM roles in Australia, Myles spoke about the benefits of having a great mentor to help women break into the industry. - Find a mentor who is a reflection of who you want to be or the perception of where you want to be, find that person. - A great mentor is someone who is a great listener, approachable, and someone who is able to talk through an issue. - A great mentor will be available to you, they are there to listen and say “what you are feeling is ok and normal” and provide guidance on how you can navigate a situation. And Myles’ three key tips for someone looking for a mentor: 1. I encourage anyone who is new to Australia or looking for a mentor to find a sports team, you might find inspiration and guidance from people outside of your work norm. 2. Don’t be afraid to talk to someone for advice or to talk through an issue—you never know if you don’t ask. 3. To know what a good mentor is, you have to learn what a bad one is, expose yourself to industry events and network. You will find people with interesting perspectives that might give you the edge to overcome your challenges.
