Psychologist Martin Seligmant coined the term learned helplessness whereby a person faces negative, uncontrollable circumstances and stops trying to improve upon their situation. Seligmant figured out there are three main questions we ask ourselves when faced with negative, uncontrollable circumstances: 1. Is this permanent or impermanent? 2. Is this pervasive or specific? 3. Is this personal or impersonal? The answers to those three questions are our explanatory style. When we answer those three questions with 3Ps – permanent, pervasive and personal then we can develop (or have) learned helplessness. Learned helplessness is counter-productive and disempowering. Colleagues or staff who show signs of learned helplessness will need extra support and encouragement to help them reframe situations. Modelling and teaching realistic optimism is the best way to combat their negativity bias.

💰🤔 Currently in Australia for every dollar on average that men earn, women earn 89 cents. Monday August 19th marked Equal Pay Day, highlighting the number of extra days after the end of financial year that it takes women to earn the same as men. Australia is improving the inequality but at our current rate it will take us 24 years to achieve gender pay parity.
