About us

The Aboriginal Community Housing Industry Association (ACHIA) NSW is the peak body for Aboriginal Community Housing Providers (ACHPs) in NSW. We advocate for and represent all not-for-profit, community controlled, Aboriginal Community Housing Providers, including Local Aboriginal Land Councils and other organisations constituted under law. ACHIA NSW fosters joint work between ACHPs, government, Aboriginal communities, and other stakeholders. ACHIA NSW seeks to grow genuinely co-designed, culturally-informed responses to housing issues that affect Aboriginal people, their families, and communities. ACHIA NSW is a member-based organisation. We encourage every ACHP in NSW to join.

The countdown to the launch of the ACHIA NSW website is on, but we can't wait ANY longer to share our rebrand with you! Check out our new logo and the complete artwork below, thanks to the amazing Sean Kinchela, Local Famous !! The soon-to-launch ACHIA NSW website will include Sean's full Artist Statement. However, check out a snippet below ❤️ 💛 🖤. Sean says “working with ACHIA has been an honour, being able to bring an artwork to life that represents their work and everything they represent. Promoting the human rights of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in NSW to decent, affordable, and secure housing. Representing NSW corner to corner, the urban, coastal, and inland communities was a real stand-out point about ACHIA to me. The commitment to the housing system for our people had a huge influence on me creating an ACHIA artwork that would represent not only the work they do but also our people and communities.” Watch this space for more exciting updates!

A productive week at Parliament House engaging with key people in our collective effort of building a thriving and sustainable sector. We caught up with; - The office of the Hon Richard Marles, Deputy Prime Minister. - The Hon Clare O'Neil, Federal Minister for Housing and Homelessness - The office of the Hon Malarndirri McCarthy, Federal Minister for Indigenous Australians - Dr Cassandra Goldie AO, CEO of the Australian Council of Social Services During our discussions, we focused on several critical areas: - Strengthening Partnerships: We highlighted the readiness of our sector and the robust collaborations with private industry—both domestically and internationally—that are essential for our collective success. - Empowering Communities: We advocated for a clear election commitment to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing sector to build homes, create meaningful jobs, and foster a sustainable industry. - A Dedicated Housing Plan: We emphasised the urgent need for a distinct National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing and Homelessness Plan. - Funding Initiatives: We presented a compelling case for funding the Joint Council Agreed Housing Sector Strengthening Plan. - Innovative Solutions: We explored practical strategies to enhance access to Commonwealth funding and introduced new, innovative approaches to financing our initiatives. It was also lovely to bump into Wendy Hayhurst, Kate Colvin and Emma Greenhalgh and hear about all the amazing work everyone is doing. The community control sector is at the forefront of innovation and thought leadership. Our deep connections with the community enable us to develop and implement effective solutions across all areas of our work. Housing is not just a necessity; it is a fundamental human right and the cornerstone of a fulfilling life. We are committed to collaborating with government, private industry, our mainstream partners, and most critically our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities nationwide to drive real and lasting social and economic prosperity. National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing Association (NATSIHA) Tom Slockee Benjamin (BJ) Thompson

While we've been busy behind the scenes preparing for the launch of the ACHIA NSW website and our rebranding, the Deadly ACHIA Team still made their way out to Bathurst this past weekend to showcase our great work with all those attended. A huge thank you to our partner, Deadly Science, who provided endless amounts of Lego in support of young people aspiring to build their dream home - it was a hit, once again! It was also a blast to see some of the young people we met last year return to our tent to catch up again. We're looking forward to seeing you all again in 2025! #KO2024 #NSWAboriginalRugbyLeagueKnockout Shane Todd - Lonsdale, Eleanor McCall, Lisa Sampson, Simon Wade

📣 REPORT RELEASE ALERT NSW CAPO to Launch Report on Priority Reform 3 (PR3), Independent, Aboriginal-Led Accountability Mechanism. Congratulations to Iona Roy, Mas Banu, Tracey & all involved in this extremely important piece of work. Next stop……… legislation! NSW Coalition of Aboriginal Peak Organisations (NSW CAPO) launched a report recommending the establishment of an Independent, Aboriginal-led Government Accountability Mechanism in NSW. This Mechanism aims to hold the NSW Government accountable to Aboriginal people for achieving transformative improvements in Aboriginal outcomes. The proposed Mechanism, developed through an 18-month Aboriginal-led design process, includes two core functions: enhancing existing accountability processes and leading Aboriginal-owned initiatives. The model reflects the wishes and expertise of Aboriginal communities and is backed by comprehensive research. NSW CAPO urges the NSW Joint Council for Closing the Gap to endorse this model and calls on the NSW Government to support its establishment through legislative changes and sustainable funding.
