Our Deputy Chair Catriona Lowe attended the first ever OECD Consumer Policy Ministerial Meeting in Paris this week. Australia was honoured to Chair the meeting. During the meeting representatives from OECD countries, partner economies, and relevant stakeholders engaged in meaningful discussions on how to protect and empower consumers for a more sustainable and digital future. Together they made a collective pledge to strengthen consumer policy by officially endorsing the OECD Declaration on Protecting and Empowering Consumers in the Digital and Green Transitions. This Declaration recognises that robust consumer policy and enforcement are needed to address the challenges of the digital and green transition and emphasises that consumer well-being should be a priority for businesses and for government policy. Qantas admitted it breached the Australian Consumer Law by engaging in misleading or deceptive conduct, making false or misleading representations and engaging in conduct liable to mislead the public about more than 82,000 flights scheduled to depart between May 2022 and May 2024. Qantas admitted that it benefited from the conduct by obtaining revenue from consumers who may have chosen a cheaper Qantas flight or a flight with another carrier had they known their chosen flight had already been cancelled. Qantas also benefited by retaining revenue from consumers who were less likely to change carrier when they were eventually notified their flight had been cancelled. “This is a substantial penalty, which sends a strong signal to all businesses, big or small, that they will face serious consequences if they mislead their customers.” - ACCC Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb. We’ve welcomed the Treasurer's announcement of $30 million additional funding for investigations and enforcement relating to the supermarket and retail sector. These additional resources will allow for a significant enhancement of our enforcement and compliance activities. “This funding will enable us to identify and escalate a range of investigations in this sector, including in relation to potential misleading pricing claims or practices, claims about delivery timeframes and costs, and businesses misrepresenting consumers’ rights under the Australian Consumer Law.” - ACCC Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb. https://bit.ly/4gHZl1H
