An exciting announcement for Yarralumla Brickworks! Eight years in the making, the announcement of the approved Estate Development Plan allows the project to progress. Yarralumla Brickworks is a unique mixed use development in the heart of Canberra, focused on delivering a reimagination of the original Brickworks and kilns to include a residential precinct, restaurants, bars, a bakery, boutique commercial spaces, a day spa, skin clinic, and allied health spaces. "“This heritage significant site will reveal layers of the past to the new occupants with most of the existing structures retained, repurposed and left as relics to evidence the industrial history. We’re thrilled to see this project progress and look forward to working with Doma and the team of architects to deliver a truly unique offering in the Canberra market,” says SJB Director, Emily Wombwell.

The latest approvals for DOMA Group are a “critical step” in its renewal of a Canberra historical landmark. Doma is redeveloping the old Canberra Brickworks site at Yarralumla, which at one time produced the red bricks of Canberra’s oldest homes and the original Parliament House, following its foundation in 1913. Doma is planning 380 homes on the 16.1ha site, with the overall project tipped to cost $58 million. In the past week, we've been fortunate to see three of our projects recognised at the UDIA Awards, The Urban Developer Awards, and the INDE Awards. Kurraba Residences by Thirdi Group Group took home Development of the Year in the Medium Density Residential category at The Urban Developer Awards, while 2 Macpherson Street in Hurstville by Homes NSW won the Affordable Housing category at the UDIA Awards, demonstrating how design can make senior social housing both welcoming and functional. Nightingale Marrickville also received a high commendation at the INDE Awards in the multi-residential space category. Another affordable housing development, the project fosters a cohesive community and focuses on sustainable practices while creating a housing option for those who need it most. Homes at Nightingale Marrickville are designed to be small in footprint and space efficient. But the impact of the project reaches beyond its immediate confines, its design challenges traditional development models by demonstrating that increased density doesn't have to compromise quality of life. Skyrocketing rents and limited affordable housing options have left many renters struggling to make ends meet. Nightingale Marrickville seeks to challenge this status quo by offering a socially sustainable and inclusive alternative that prioritises affordability, community, and the environment. The project has been featured in Issue 15 of The Commercial Project, on shelves now. https://lnkd.in/gZkmNbj6 The Local Project Nightingale Housing Fresh Hope Communities #housing #affordablehousing #renting #sustainability #design

It’s no secret that we love a brick building.   To celebrate the humble brick, we collaborated with Tim Ross and Built with Brickworks to discuss Kurraba Residences, highlighting the beautiful Domain Terracotta brick used throughout.   Comprising 24 apartments, Kurraba Residences is articulated as three buildings. Each have been artfully constructed using Domain Terracotta bricks, creating both texture and tactile depth to the scalloped facades and patterned brick coursing. The choice of earthy terracotta bricks further enhances the integration of the buildings into their cliffside setting, creating an illusion of organic emergence from the landscape.   Head to Brickworks’ website to watch the full video. Our proposal for 2 Fitzwilliam Street introduces a critical piece of urban fabric to Parramatta’s fast-changing CBD, facilitating intuitive connections and public respite with a strong sense of belonging and resilience. The new towers will be defined by high-quality living and office spaces with a focus on community, health and wellbeing.   We loved hearing from each entrant that took part in Urban Property Group's recent Design Excellence Competition. Thank you to both the jury and Urban Property Group, we can't wait to show you more of our process as we develop the design for 2 Fitzwilliam Street. #competition #design #process #collaboration

Hear from the judges, architects and our team about the Design Excellence Competition for our mixed-use Parramatta project, which was recently held in our office. After a full day of presentations by SJB, Bates Smart and a joint submission from Plus Architecture and Furtado Sullivan, SJB were announced as the winning architects for our innovative Parramatta project, located at 2 Fitzwilliam Street. Olivia Hyde LFAIA ARB, Director of Design Excellence, Government Architect NSW said, “It was a very tight competition... [with] three really excellent entries... what stood out with the SJB scheme was a really beautiful and rich, human-scaled podium area that also responded to key desire lines and views within the city from a pedestrian’s point of view, [and] opportunities for great activation... we felt overall it had a very strong public outcome and also managed to deliver on the other elements of the brief as well.” Thank you to the architecture firms and their teams for the work which went into their design schemes, our jury Olivia Hyde, Director of Design Excellence, Government Architect NSW, Nicholas Bandounas, Director, Studio.SC and Roderick Simpson, Urbanist and Architect, Simpson Wilson Architects, and our competition manager Brendan Hoskins from Beam Planning. It was also great to have students from Western Sydney University observing. “I was surprised by how spacious the Teilhaus feels. As soon as I walked in, I just felt so happy. It doesn’t feel like a small space. It has great light and airflow and doesn’t feel stuffy. It’s just been amazing. I have a home. Every time I walk in the door, my heart sings.” - Cam, Nightingale Marrickville resident We’re pleased to share that Nightingale Marrickville has received a commendation in the 2024 ArchitectureAU Award for Social Impact. Nightingale Marrickville fosters a cohesive community by offering long-term housing security, particularly for priority groups such as key workers, First Nations residents, people living with disabilities, and women over 55. Exemplifying the kind of development we need more of in Australia, Nightingale Marrickville provides a solution to complex urban problems. You can read more about the project in ArchitectureAU and the July/August issue of ArchitectureAustralia magazine. Home Richmond is one of the first BTR projects to be operationally successful in Australia. It’s an offering that meets the growing demand for diverse housing in Melbourne and prioritises the experience of the end user. A thriving urban village, the 368 apartments are home to a varied demographic of residents who benefit from secure tenancies and a high level of amenity. Situated above Richmond Traders market hall at the corner of Church Street and Bridge Road, the development comprises five unique buildings each with its own street address, connected by a series of elevated landscaped communal spaces. Beyond retail and hospitality offerings, the residential amenities are thoughtfully designed to foster community and facilitate social interactions between residents. A building concierge is available, and a dedicated split-level work hub offers views of the Melbourne city skyline. The extensive wellness area includes a gym, pool, yoga studio and treatment rooms, as well as bookable lounge and dining areas, an outdoor cinema and multiple BBQ areas. Client: Home Delivered in collaboration with NH Architecture, Jack Merlo Landscape Design and Hacer Group. #aboutsjb #buildtorent #btr #commercial #retail #hospitality #wellness

We are delighted to share that at the 2024 NSW Architecture Awards held on Friday, Nightingale Marrickville received both the Premier's Prize and a Commendation for Residential Architecture - Multiple Housing, with Huntington receiving the award for the category. These are some of our favourite residential development projects to date. Not only do they achieve excellence in their design (both our word and the juries), but they successfully address key considerations for density in differing environments. They are examples that consider strategic urban renewal, housing affordability, community acceptance, variation in scale and typology; and environmental sustainability. They’re each more than their design, and demonstrate how our industry can provide solutions to the real world problems we all face today. A huge thank you is owed to both Australian Institute of Architects and to our amazing clients and collaborators, particularly Fresh Hope Communities Nightingale Housing and DOMA, without whom these projects wouldn’t exist. We also want to give a shoutout to our friends CHROFI and bangawarra for winning the 2024 Architecture Medallion for North Head Viewing Platforms. It’s a terrific example of what can be achieved when we allow ourselves to listen and be guided by Country – big love and congratulations!

While Canberra is a city in its own right, it also bears the responsibility of being the nations capital. For this reason alone, buildings on Northbourne Avenue, the main road leading to Parliament House, must respect, reflect, and represent one of the most important addresses in the Country. With its strong geometric presence Turner Place responds directly to its site, through its connection to the seat of Parliament. The soft pinks and warm greys of the stone base, through to the earthy tones of the brickwork and the crispness of the white touching the sky reflects the natural colours of the Australian landscape. The facade on Northbourne Avenue seeks to address the civic nature of the context and the main access into the city of Canberra with a strict uniformity in scale, proportion and symmetry.
