Police are given extraordinary power and with that must come the highest standards of accountability. We welcome the findings of serious misconduct against three police officers after they deprived an Aboriginal man of his right to silence in custody – a systemic issue which has gone on for too long. Everyone deserves a safe and secure place to call home. We welcome this step towards greater protections for people living in rental homes. With more than half of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households renting in either the private sector or social housing, new rental reforms have the potential to make a huge difference for our families and communities.   The ALS runs the Greater Sydney Aboriginal Tenants Service, supporting renters from the Central Coast through to the Blue Mountains and Macarthur areas. Serious breaches of human rights are taking place inside NSW prisons - like young Aboriginal people being confined to cells alone. The NSW Government is accountable for the treatment of people it locks up. It's unacceptable that this responsibility is being outsourced to private operators who are driven by profit.

Some phenomenal ALS women including our CEO Karly Warner and solicitor Emma Hudson-Buhagiar were at the Australian Women Lawyers Conference late last week. Karly spoke about youth justice while Emma spoke about her journey in law. Here they are pictured during their session and with Australian Women Lawyers President Astrid Haban-Beer as well as high-profile barrister and presenter Jennifer Robinson.

Karly Warner on the new legislation passed in the NT: “Jailing children is just a lazy response that fuels cycles of disadvantage and makes everyone worse off. This will backfire. “This is a sad day that we'll remember." Maggie Munn (they/them) with equally strong words "Less than two years after being the first jurisdiction to raise the minimum age of criminal responsibility, the Northern Territory have condemned children, particularly First Nations children who are disproportionately incarcerated, to the trauma of the criminal legal system.” Not sure I’ve seen so many organisations untied on one policy like this before, only for them to all be ignored Yarn in National Indigenous Times

Policies from the NT government that attack vulnerable children and make the problem worse are not solutions.
