What we love: Seeing Simply Piano illuminate the actual keys on our piano to signal what to play next. The app’s excellent tutorials are even more helpful when the instructions—and feedback—are demonstrated on our own instrument rather than on a screen. And that’s before we put our newfound skills to the test playing hits from our favorite artists and movies.

Don’t miss: Not near a piano? The experimental Virtual Piano overlays a digital keyboard over any table (make sure to adjust the height so the instrument aligns with the surface). When it’s time to play, choose either spatial or AI tracking for your finger movements.

Quick tip: When you lift your hand from the piano during a lesson, you’ll see a number floating over each finger—“1” for your thumb, “2” for your index, and so on—to remind you which fingering to use.
