This book is the best purchase I have ever made as a novelist. It is so helpful for a plotter like me who still has a lot to learn about organizing ideas into a comprehendible storyline. Brody does a great job of explaining the story beats while also making the book easy and enjoyable to read. I would recommend this book to any writer, whether you are a total beginner or a published author looking to expand your knowledge. It truly is "The Last Book on Novel Writing You'll Ever Need."

This book is a MUST for any aspiring fiction author.

Very engaging and well organized. Easy to follow. Use of popular references and explains them in a way that even if you haven't read those particular books, the references make sense in how she is explaining them.

I NEVER write in my books. But this one i have underlined, highlighted, and written notes in the margins. It's an invalid resource if you are writing a novel.

It begins by helping you craft your main character and what drives them. Then it has very detailed explanations of the 3 act, 15 beat structure.

Following the explanation of the beats, there are 10 chapters that explore the application of those beats in different genres of writing, using specific examples from books in each genre.

This book truly helped me figure out how to make my story progress at an engaging pace while still keeping true to the underlying theme. It really is the last book on novel writing you will ever need.

This is, by far, the most phenomenal instructional/teaching/reference work I've ever read. Period.

Oh, should I say a LITTLE BIT more? Sorry!

I have written short stories, song lyrics, and various types of marketing content and blog articles over the last 20+ years, but I've never attempted a novel before this year. When I was set upon by a story idea that would require not only a book, but several books in which to be told, I quickly found myself--a life-long and devout pantser!--scrambling to figure out how to outline a novel. (I was too overwhelmed by the size of the story and the alien process of writing a book to even consider pantsing.)

I read a bunch of articles online and had just convinced myself I'd created a custom, patchwork solution that would work for me, when a friend on Twitter stepped forward to recommend this book, Save the Cat! Writes a Novel. My first thought was probably: Weird title! But I read the description, ordered it immediately, and then began feeling a steadily growing sense of confidence from page one on.

This book provides incredible informational value on every page--and, if you don't believe me, I'd be happy to send you my bill for highlighters! It is the perfect book for anyone from novice novelist to experienced author with multiple books under their belts already.
And I want to underscore the fact that this isn't JUST for plotters. Although my goal is to handle the series that I'm writing as though I were a full-on plotter, I can tell from many years of writing by the seat of my pants that the framework for storytelling provided in this text could easily and readily be used by pantsers who get stuck at various points along the process, or who find their passion for the story dwindling in the middle of the book and need some emergency fuel to get them across the finish line.

Rather than get into all the elements that this book covers, I'll just say, with certainty, that it covers what you need to know. It covered all my questions and there was plenty left over that didn't apply to me. And yet it's written so well that I read practically every word, even when it didn't apply to me.

In summary: buy this book ASAP! You'll be so happy you did.

Save the Cat Writes a Novel is a delightful must read for any writer. Within these pages, I found so many of the base rules and ideas of forming a story that I have always known to be true. Jessica Brody- and in relation, Blake Snyder, the original author of Save the Cat (for screenwriting)- gives a wonderful account of why people read the books they read. Not in genres of horror, fantasy, or romance, but in genres of a much more important sort: the genre of storytelling. For any writer, or reader, these tropes will be quite familiar- from the down and out underdog to the love that encourages change. The theory that any writing can fit into these beats is not just a theory, but utter truth. Even stories that are not the norm, that defies any trope, can be seen here in small, subtle connections.

While I find this novel to be accurate, and quite helpful in making the writer think about their stories, I’ve given it a four out of five stars for my personal reading experience. I judge writing craft books on two things: Useful information, and enjoyment in reading.

Useful information, this novel has in abundance. I find that I will likely use it as a reference book- something to flick open when I write a new story, to answer the questions within as I figure out where my story fits, or to reference the beats. The beat sheet within will work wonders for the hearts of plotters, though it is a little more in depth than my personal writing style, and that’s okay. This novel isn’t a die-hard blueprint to follow, but more of a guide.

However, when it comes to enjoyment of reading, I found myself struggling a little bit. A good amount of this book plots the beat-by-beat process of other novels, putting them into the Save the Cat theory format and showing why it appears again and again in our favorite novels. This is a brilliant way to show an example of the process, but I don’t think it is enticing enough to read again unless there is a specific reason. Thus, along with my lack of interest in the beat sheet, the next time I write a story, I will be pulling open the book and reading the specific chapter of the story genre I’m working with, but I don’t see myself rereading this entire book for quite some time.

Overall, I think this book is a good start for an inexperienced writer, or someone who wants to see into the mind of those who study stories for a living. Or perhaps, just to study someone who is more well read than they are, as this novel does have lists upon lists of books that are must reads. I would recommend Save the Cat Writes a Novel to anyone with a writing craft shelf in their library, a staple of the genre, but I would caution your expectations. This is a good textbook to make notes of, but the take-away of information will vary on the experience of the reader.

    Meine Rezension

“You ‚need‘ a good story. And I’m going to help you get there.“ Seite 2

Aber was?

Writes a Novel“.

    Mein Fazit

5.0 out of 5 stars Melhor livro sobre o tema!

5.0 out of 5 stars A well presented thesis and argument on effective novel writing
Reviewed in Canada on March 20, 2021
Writing as a craft is an interesting thign to unpack. I don't read many (if any) books about how to write, I just go ahead and do it. Yet, a fellow writer and friend of mine read and recommended this book, so I figured, hey, I'll give it a shot.

As my awarding of five stars probably suggests, I did enjoy Save the Cat! Writes a Novel. What I enjoyed most was that Brody not only shows us the roadmap (beat sheet) and explains what she's presenting to create a successful novel, but she also gives us examples of existing works. It's like an essay where she gives us her thesis, then backs it up with her argument. I'll admit, I didn't read through every example of the beat sheets she did, mostly because there were a bunch that I had no familiarity with at all and felt it wouldn't serve me well, however, the ones I did read made sense with her argument. I feel like if this were a paper handed in to a prof, she'd do well.

Do I necessarily believe that the 15 beats she's outlined are the only way to have a successful novel? No. But I enjoyed this analysis of story structure, and it's got me thinking about my own writing in new ways, which is what I think these kinds of books should do. They shouldn't prescribe us something and come off as preachy. It should be a here's my thesis and my points to back it up, and that's exactly what we get here.
