Many small firms don’t have a Human Resources Department. So, when it comes time to seek, interview, hire, train, and develop employees, those tasks usually fall to the owner. They must figure out where to find candidates, what to ask in an interview, how much to pay, how to set up a training plan, and how to keep them engaged and motivated. That research takes valuable time away from the owner.

There is a lot of information out there, however, not much of it is not fully relevant to our industry. This means that the hiring process is an uncoordinated plan stitched together from various sources. Fortunately, Caleb Brown has assembled all the information needed in one book - “Successful Hiring for Financial Planners.”

At FP Transitions I work with advisors who are building multi-generational firms. I recommend this book to our clients at least once or twice a week!

Registered Investment Advisers are facing a looming shortage of financial planners. Most RIAs, which are often founded as start-ups struggle to hire would-be successors and/or associate planners as their business and assets under management expand. This book is a well-written, step-by-step guide on how to hire, train and retain successful financial planners.

My wife is thinking about CFP and I am researching the market for her. This book provides valuable benchmarks and skill sets to master to be successful in any firm for a candidate. It also provides a framework for aligning on expectations between firm owner and employee.

This was a very helpful guide for thinking through the hiring process and setting compensation model and new employee expectations

Great information about hiring financial planning staff. I like the parts that give compensation examples that are from real occurrences.

While the title of this book reflects a narrow scope in application, I would contend that its content would be helpful to a much broader base. The author's discussion of the differences in career perspective between Baby Boomers and those of subsequent generations is something that would apply to any type of business. I was struck by the author's ability to get to the heart of the issue in evaluating the goals of a particular firm, assessing personal strengths and weaknesses, and seeking candidates that will compliment the present climate of a firm, instead of just mirroring the general personality of the owner. This short read is packed with great information that would help a business of any kind come up with a clear plan for growth.

Caleb has written a defining book that should be in the toolbox of every financial planning firm that anticipates growth. This book should also in the hands of every planner seeking employment, be it for their first position or for a career change. “Successful Hiring for Financial Planners” is a step-by-step guide that takes the reader from the first stage of examining the firm’s needs and resources through designing the perfect fit and then proceeding to find the right team member for your firm the very first time. The hard stuff, like compensation issues and replacing recalcitrant workers is tackled with specific examples. The Appendix includes detailed forms, letters, agendas, schedules and other helpful tools to make the entire process run smoothly.

Caleb Brown has written a comprehensive review of the issues, opportunities and must do activities surrounding how to effectively hire within the financial planing environment. The years he has spent working in the financial advisory space and the experience he has gained working with the full range of advisory firms makes this a compelling, must-read book if you are looking to hire financial advisors. The competition for qualified new employees who want to work in financial planning is fierce today; you need every edge you can find. Caleb offers plenty of ideas in an easy to read format.
