Alaska Airline approved!

Alaska Airline approved!
I travel yearly with my 17lb Brussels Griffon from Seattle to Cabo via Alaska Airlines (coach). This year Oct 2024, I bought this Sherpa rolling crate to try out. It rolled smoothly through the airport and I definitely appreciated that both the side flaps can be rolled up for good air flow while my dog was stowed under the seat in front of me.Previously I used the Kurgo G Train backpack for dogs which also fits well under Alaska's cheap seats, but it did become a bit uncomfortable lugging him around the airport on my back like that. The Kurgo also doesn't have nearly as much air flow as this Sherpa crate. Because my dog is a flat faced, brachycephalic breed, good airflow is vital. When I bought this Sherpa, I wasn't totally confident that Alaska wouldn't give me a hard time since it is slightly larger than their listed max measurements, but I'm happy to report that there were no issues at all and it definitely fits under their window and middle coach or premium seats.TIP* If flying Alaska, note that the leg space under the aisle seats are always more narrow than the middle or window seat. This is because their aisle seats are where they store the entertainment/electronic box for all the adjoining seats. I don't believe that this Sherpa crate would fit under an AISLE seat in coach or premium (first class would fit fine) so be sure you choose any seat other than an aisle if not flying first class. The width and lenght of this crate really can't be adjusted or "smooshed" since the wheels are not removable so it's really the height that can be manipulated.I'll also note that soft crates typically aren't an issue with Alaska since they can be somewhat manipulated or "smooshed" to fit underneath the seat (so long as the pet can turn around) but to be safe, I used my Kurgo backpack as my carry on and figured if there was an issue with the Sherpa at check-in, I could just transfer my dog into my Kurgo backpack at the gate and use the Sherpa rolling crate as my carry on. But like I mentioned, the Sherpa fit without any issue. The length of the crate does hang out slightly when under the seat but this isn't a problem. As I list out my Pros and Cons below, please keep in mind that my dog is very, VERY chill while flying. He is not an escape artist, he's not a stressed out flyer and he doesn't struggle with environmental anxiety.I pulled him around the airport in this crate without the top being zipped and also left just enough of it unzipped while in flight to let him stick his head out (see pics). For the record, the airline does state that pet crates are to remain securely closed at all times while inside the cabin. Also for the record, I don't follow this rule. I always allow my dog to pop his head out once we are at cruising elevation, closing him back in once we begin our descent. I do this so I can easily keep an eye on him because of his flat face. His particular temperament while flying and training allows me to do this, knowing he will "stay" inside his crate on command unless I give him the "okay" to come out.Pro's:Fits under Alaska Airlines seats, rolls smoothly, seems comfortable and has plenty of airflow for my brachycephalic Brussels Griffon and all zippers seem sturdy.Cons: There's no short tether to secure to your pets harness or collar while inside this crate. There's also no way to lock the zippers to help avoid a savvy or stressed out pet pushing his way through a zipper opening.Neutral: To enhance airflow, there is alot of stiff mesh. My dog is not a crate fighter so I can't say how well or how long this mesh would hold up with a pooch trying to claw or chew his way out.(For my dog, I appreciate all the mesh)The cons I listed above were not issue for me or my dog personally. I am perfectly happy with this crate, it saves me from having to carry my dog on my back and it fit my doggo's needs for our airline travels.

This BRAND NEW one I just bought - the strap broke in the airport after only carrying it 10 minutes - not happy! My old one lasted for years without doing that. I had to rig it to make it work so I could complete my journey. Though my old one is FIVE stars, I would take off 2 stars for the strap on this new one. I hope the company will make it right.

Update 3: I bought a new one (Original Deluxe) in black and lil Bear loves this one more than the original one. It has more mesh for air (not shown in these pics) but otherwise is very similar to the Delta Black one I had. He actually got in it and took a nap--I was surprised! Still a good buy for the money. Bear is about 15 pounds and is a long-haired chihuahua mix - stocky build - he JUST fits in it. I could go for a large but he is able to turn around, lie down comfortably, and walk in it just fine. I like this one even better than the first one.
    ---------

Update 2: Travel. Lil Bear and I did great together with this Sherpa Carrier. I hauled him around the airport easier than I thought, though it killed my shoulders and back to lug around his carrier and my other carry on, but that's travel. We went through the security line with no problems at all. And, the carrier fit under the seat perfectly. Lil Bear lay quietly the entire time (but he is a well-behaved awesome calm dog). The medium just fit - I mean JUST fit. I considered whether I should have bought a large but then that would have been too big. So measure your dog and look at the dimensions of the carriers and go from there.
    -----------

Update: I just found the other pocket on the other side! So two pockets!

This is a very well-made/constructed pet carrier that I bought for less than I thought I'd have to pay for such a nice carrier! The 'canvas' is made of quality material and the seams are firm and intact. There are handles so you can hold the carrier in your hands, or you can use the included strap to put it across your shoulder.

There are two openings to the carrier: one on the front, and one on the top. The zippers are heavy-duty and well made. There are also air vents - one on the side, and one on each end that you can unvelcro the covering to provide that air vent.

Inside on the "floor" of the carrier is a nice padding that will detach for laundering.

On the side is a zippered pocket. That would be my only "negative" to this - I wish the pocket were a little bigger so I could fit a little more in it, but it would fit some treats and a regular leash. A bigger deeper pocket would be nice, but that's not a deal breaker at all.

THE SIZE ISSUE: - Besides wanting the pocket to be a little bigger, finding the correct size can be a little confusing. I researched so many reviews before purchasing, and the sizes and poundage were all over the place for a medium carrier! Argh! I knew I didn't want a small, but deciding between a large and medium was daunting. I went with the medium and he fits, but it's close. It's why the 4 stars instead of five, though I'm still tempted to give it 5 stars, but maybe some videos and pictures from the manufacturer would help. If you are confused about finding the correct size, I can only tell you that my dog is a long-haired chihuahua but mixed with something else - he's about 14 pounds, and about 10 inches high or so--measuring him from feet to shoulder/back height, length about 19-20 inches from nose to back (not including tail of course!)--these are approximate as it's more difficult to measure a dog than I thought (laugh). He fits inside the carrier with enough room to turn around but it's close - he can stand but it's very close - he'll be lying down 99% of the time and he should feel secure and comfortable. I have no idea about under the seat issues, yet, because this will be my first time to fly with a pet. The large may have been too large where he is kind of shuffled around in there - I felt the medium gave him some security from being "knocked about." I don't know if this helps, but I do suggest ordering early enough that you can not only train your dog to be comfortable with the idea, but also to gauge the size.

My dog is a chihuahua-something-I-don't-know mix, and is about 14 pounds. He's about 10 inches high. He fits in it just fine. I didn't want him to have so much room that he was "knocked about" as I carry him, but he has enough room to stand--but just enough to stand, and he can turn around in it. The small would have been way too small, and the large would be too large. But he fits closely and I'd not want it any smaller than this.

Surprisingly, the weight when you carry him even if you use the shorter straps on your shoulder isn't bad at all.

Some Tips for getting your dog used to the carrier:

They include a little tag with some tips. I did my own thing, too. If your dog is not used to a carrier, some things you can do are:

I did these things one or two times a day only:
Make sure the carrier is associated with something good - way long before your trip is to come, you should start preparing your dog so he isn't scared of something new.

I started early on by putting a treat inside the carrier and put the carrier by the side of his bed. I just let him go in and get it without me closing him up. I did this for several weeks, the only difference is that after a couple weeks of doing this, I gently nudged him in and closed the front "gate" but didn't zip it-I petted and praised him. Doing this a few times, whenever I'd pick up the carrier to bring it over to his bed even before I opened the treat can to put in the treat, he'd be excited, knowing he was going to get a treat.

Then next stage I put the treat in there, but I closed him up. Did this a couple times, reaching my hand through the top part and petting and praising him.

The next stage, I closed him up with the treat and carried him around my house, talking to him in a happy voice. This is the stage where I am now. By time my flight comes, he'll be very comfortable inside there. I'm also going to take him in the car and drive around with him in it.

He's a calm well-behaved dog, so I don't expect any problems at all. If I have problems once I do take my trip, I'll be back to report that.

    I do highly recommend.

We bought this carrier for our first airplane trip with our 18 pound dog. I spent a lot of time reading the reviews on this carrier and many others and I hope this summary is helpful to those who have small dogs.

Our dog weighs 18 pounds. He is not tiny but not big either. We were a bit worried whether he would fit in this carrier and others. We worried because the carriers seem to say that the dog has to be 16 pounds or less. This really doesn't matter; it seems more the length and girth of the dog that matters. Our dog was able to lay down comfortably in this carrier, although he didn't really want to do so. He preferred to keep his head out, as I'll explain below, and he was calm enough to do so.

After much research on airline websites, and calling Delta, it came down to the fact that carriers are not supposed to be more than 11 inches in height. If you have soft carriers, like this one, it matters less because they can squeeze below that height under the seat in front of you. This one is 10.5 inches, so it fits fine.

The design is good for letting his head to be out at the top, which was very important for us.

The opening on one side could be zipped open on the plane, and he could spread out even easier inside the carrier. When the flight is in its cruising stage, there is no problem pulling the carrier out from under the chair so the dog can be more comfortable. That's when we opened the end somewhat and made it easier for him to lie down.

The fact is that one neither leg did any stewardess ask us to push the carrier under the seat in front of us! So it really was moot to close it up and push him inside. We just left the top open part way all the time, and he kept his head stuck out of the top, so he could see us. He was very comfortable.

This all assumes that your dog is quiet and calm enough to hand out of the carrier this way. This relates more to your dog's temperament than the carrier though! We did medicate our dog with our vet's advice, which helped of course.

It was very easy to carry, was well made, and was not too small for our dog (who is large for a small dog), but also not too large for the airline requirements.

Hint: our dog was much calmer when we carried him in this carrier slung over the shoulder, so he was not flat on the ground. When we put him on the ground, he seemed more nervous and wanted to come out. But it is easy to carry on the shoulder, and very stable with its shoulder strap.

    So in summary:

If your dog is reasonably calm and/or is medicated, and is 20 pounds or less, you should be able to travel easily with this carrier.

A well made carrier ,the measurements exactly the airlines measurements,so no worries about non acceptance by them, as long the pet moves easily,2 side curtains that roll down for more air if needed. An excellent choice.

Very very expensive but I’m hoping that it will be worth it if ever needed. Want to get another one but can’t justify the cost.
So far so good, no issues with it. Quite sturdy and robust.
