Anyone who is interested in the Benedictine reform of the liturgy should read this book. It gives important background into the need for a reform of the liturgy leading to the creation of the Novus Ordo Mass. It also explains how the we still need further reform ('a reform of the reform') in order to see what the fathers of the Second Vatican Council were seeking, rather than a return to the Tridentine Mass. It should be read in conjunction with the Ratzinger Report and The Spirit of the Liturgy. Then we can see how consistent Ratizinger (now Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI) has been over decades in what he has been saying about the liturgy and how the reforms enacted in his papacy, eg Summorum Pontificum, are consistent with this.
Of particular interest as well is a brilliant presentation by Stratford Caldecott called 'Towards a Liturgical Anthropolgy' in which he argues that liturgical man must be seen in the Pauline light as body, soul and spirit. In fact, he says, the roots of the stagnation of the liturgy in the 19th century, and in the midirection of the reform since Vatican II lie in a neglect of the spirit as an aspect of the soul.
