NOW A NATIONAL BESTSELLER

The definitive guide to spreading ideas, building movements, and leaping ahead in our chaotic, connected age. Get the book
New York Times columnist David Brooks calls "the best window I’ve seen into this new world."

Why do some leap ahead while others fall behind in our chaotic, connected age? In
New Power, Jeremy Heimans and Henry Timms confront the biggest stories of our time--the rise of mega-platforms like Facebook and Uber; the out-of-nowhere victories of Obama and Trump; the unexpected emergence of movements like #MeToo--and reveal what's really behind them: the rise of "new power."
For most of human history, the rules of power were clear: power was something to be seized and then jealously guarded. This "old power" was out of reach for the vast majority of people. But our ubiquitous connectivity makes possible a different kind of power. "New power" is made by many. It is open, participatory, and peer-driven. It works like a current, not a currency--and it is most forceful when it surges. The battle between old and new power is determining who governs us, how we work, and even how we think and feel.
New Power shines fresh light on the cultural phenomena of our day, from #BlackLivesMatter to the Ice Bucket Challenge to Airbnb, uncovering the new power forces that made them huge. Drawing on examples from business, activism, and pop culture, as well as the study of organizations like Lego, NASA, Reddit, and TED, Heimans and Timms explain how to build new power and channel it successfully. They also explore the dark side of these forces: the way ISIS has co-opted new power to monstrous ends, and the rise of the alt-right's "intensity machine."
In an era increasingly shaped by new power, this groundbreaking book offers us a new way to understand the world--and our role in it.

How to “produce intended effects” in today’s world

How to “produce intended effects” in today’s world
Corporate leaders, digital designers, coaches, and nonprofit directors can all learn to how to lead more effectively through this book. In New Power, Jeremy Heimans and Henry Timms share the secrets on how ideas spread, how action happens, and how we can do better work by collaborating with the transformation we all are living through.Command and control leadership doesn’t work anymore (millenials anyone?), and in this book we learn what does. The authors use compelling case studies, developing them into simple models that we can use to navigate between old and new power models.I, personally, enjoyed the four new archetypes of high performing team members and how they contrast to existing archetypes (solution seeker vs problem solver, for instance). I also liked how midway through the book, we learn exactly when not to use new power tactics, but at the end, we finish the book learning how we might blend new and old power. This book stands with Peter Diamandis and Steven Kotler’s Abundance as the most optimistic book of this decade!

A terrific, engaging and accessible read. New Power reveals with great detail and exemplary storytelling how and why the forces of power we see rising in the past 10-20 years (AirBnB, Obama, Trump, Reddit, Adult Fans of Lego, #givingtuesday, #icebucketchallenge), are doing so with such success and giving us the tools to both understand and apply these essential principles of new power in our own work and life. Read it now, it will change the way you look at this world and give you confidence and energy to participate in making it a better, more connected and healthier place to live and thrive. Congrats to Jeremy and Henry for writing what I think is the most important book of this decade, and likely the next as well. - Mark S. Young

Good book in explaining about how new power works and its importance in our current era. But the ideas were only loosely connected between each other and there is a lack of organization to present a coherent and systematic framework. This is probably the “science” of the new power concept is still too young to be truly understood and distilled into a system.

I don't normally write reviews, but I wanted to go out of my way for this book. A few signs of a good book - 1) you blink and 20 pages have gone by 2) you don't want to stop even if your daily reading time has run out 3) you remember bits and pieces 4) you go online to learn more about things mentioned in the text 5) you are sad to see it end. This book was all of these for me. If you are trying to work in the new world of work - which all of us are - this is a great handbook. The triangle framework was a great way to look at building a strong network of users and super users. The comparison of old power vs. new power was very helpful. i would recommend this book to anyone trying to understand how to grow a community, leverage social media, or to better understand how grassroots movements like #metoo succeeded and Pepsi didn't. Kudos to Jeremy and Henry for a great book. If you like Malcolm Gladwell, Dan Pink, Steven Pinker, etc - you will like this book.

Amazing book - insightful and I so appreciated the real life examples of New Power wielded for good and evil. Tom Brooks from New York Times said it best: "We have seen an explosion of new social organisms that don’t look like the old ones: Airbnb, Etsy, Black Lives Matter, #MeToo, Blockchain. If power in the Greatest Generation looked like Organization Men running big institutions, and power for the boomers looked like mass movements organized by charismatic leaders like Steve Jobs and Barack Obama, power these days looks like decentralized networks in which everyone is a leader and there’s no dominating idol. Power structures are in serious flux. The best window I’ve seen into this new world is a book called “New Power,” by Jeremy Heimans and Henry Timms."

I read this book for a SHRM credit. If you need SHRM credits, it is not bad, but I did not get any new revelations personally.
Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2018
I heard the authors interviewed and I was captivated by the concept. "New Power" did not disappoint. It crystalized the current state of "social" affairs while reviewing and analyzing how things used to run. It was a fluid read packed with all of the "social" tools one would need to market a new product or idea. I should know. I picked it up to learn how to market a new fiction character I've created and it has turned out to be my bible. My skills have improved three fold and when my character becomes a sensation, the credit will go directly to Jeremy Heimans and Henry TImms. I also love that Mr. Heimans dedicates his life to "Purpose." It doesn't get any better than that.

So if you are motivated to move forward with your new idea, new product or new message, "New Power" is for you. Grab it today. You'll be more than happy you did.

New Power used current events and topics to explain some of the power dynamics in society used by institutions and interest groups alike. Brings to light some of the pros and cons to New Power and ways we can use this system to cultivate powerful movements and encourage others to participate in their momentum. Very positive message.
